Google Video hit with a lawsuit

Cory Bergman November 10th, 2006

In documents filed with the SEC, Google says it’s been sued for copyright infringement over Google Video. The documents don’t give any details, but there’s this key paragraph: “In addition, our planned acquisition of YouTube may also subject us to additional copyright claims upon the closing of the transaction. Adverse results in these lawsuits may include awards of damages and may also result in, or even compel, a change in our business practices, which could result in a loss of revenue for us or otherwise harm our business.” Google is also facing lawsuits in Google News, Google Book Search and Google Image Search.

Obviously they’ve only practiced the Microsoft MO of throwing money at everyone whom they’ve ripped-off, but haven’t perfected it yet.

The key paragraph sounds like boiler plate disclosure to me. Obviously, it all could go horribly wrong. That was the risk in acquiring YT, but Google still has to “disclose” it.
