NBC News launches video podcasts

Full episodes of NBC Nightly News and Meet the Press will be available starting tomorrow as video podcasts via MSNBC.com, iTunes and the new Microsoft Zune download service. It just so happens that Microsoft’s Zune hits store shelves on Tuesday, as well. Press release…

PRESS RELEASE - Starting tomorrow, NBC News and MSNBC.com will offer free video podcasts of “NBC Nightly News” and “Meet the Press.” Available for download at www.podcasts.msnbc.com, the full broadcast of “Nightly News” will be available each evening at 10 pm, ET, and “Meet the Press” will be available in its entirety after each Sunday broadcast at 1 pm, ET. MSNBC.com video podcasts can be downloaded directly to users’ computers and taken on the go through Apple’s iTunes and the new Microsoft Zune download services. MSNBC.com audio podcasts, which have been available since 2005, will remain available for users without video capabilities.

NBC News and MSNBC.com are the leaders in online news and information video innovation. MSNBC.com serves an average of 60 million videos every month, including on-demand and live video from NBC News and MSNBC.com. NBC News made its programming available through audio podcast downloads in 2005 and was the first network to offer Netcasts of its programming, launching the “Nightly News Netcast,” “Meet the Press Netcast” and “Today Netcast” in the last year. Brian Williams was the first network news anchor to offer a video blog, “The Early Nightly” (www.dailynightly.msnbc.com). Recorded every morning by Williams and other NBC News correspondents, “The Early Nightly” offers an early glimpse into “NBC Nightly News’” broadcast day.

    …accepting of the new reality but protected by the fact that Nitely News is not available until 10pm eastern time when all the affiliate feeds passed.

    the same non-compete protection appears to be offered for the rest of the new vipods.

    Microft has stated that they DO NOT want to refer to music/video downloads to Podcasts!!!

    ALL Video downloads will be Vidcasting/Vidcasts.

    Podcast just gives promotion to the iPod.

    Edward: Microsoft isn’t alone in that sentiment, but I don’t think they have much say in the matter. People are going to call the things what they want to call ‘em. True enough - you don’t need an iPod to watch/listen to one. But I think “podcast” is in the vernacular whether MS likes it or not.
