Playstation 3 debuts sparks violence

Police broke out pepperspray to contain mobs rushing stores to buy the white-hot Sony Playstation 3 on the the day it debuted. Sony shipped 400,000 units for the U.S. debut, but it wasn’t enough to meet the demand.

Some societies fight for freedom, some fight for what’s right, and in America, we fight over a video game system.
Pathetic. We’re so materialistic.

Wouldn’t it have been easier for each store to issue lots starting at a certain time to be used in a drawing to determine the right to purchase one of their allotment of PS3s?
Then they should reveal to the public that that location only has 6 or 20 or whatever they were shipped.
They could even use the lots that weren’t drawn as coupons for discounted PS3s when they come in, perhaps redeemable with a down payment. Or a pecent off on store merchandise.

There is no way that Sony did not know that the demand for this product would be great. After the shortage of xbox 360s they knew exactly what would happen with the playstation 3. I think they did not produce enough on purpose so that maybe company stock would rise.
