Burger King debuts its own Xbox games
Cory Bergman November 26th, 2006
Yet another example of corporate America’s continued move into content. Burger King is selling its own Xbox titles: Pocketbike Racer, Big Bumpin and Sneak King. Each feature the BK mascot “The King” with Xbox Live functionality and a companion site, BKGamer.com that features high scores and downloadable content. Now, why would anyone want to buy one of these games? They’re available at Burger King restaurants for just $3.99 a pop, which must qualify for the cheapest Xbox games ever.

“Corporate America” has been in content for years (I don’t think NBC Universal, or its somewhat predecessor, Vivendi Universal, is a charity, but I might be wrong; perhaps an unintentional non-profit?).
This is more using games as marketing and, perhaps, for product placement — with those budgets underwriting the game. Not an incursion of corporate America into video games.

I hear rumblings that Burger King has been throwing around the idea of making a feature length film, as well. It’ll prbably relaese it in a similar fashion.

Worked on me. After I saw the commercials I went out the next day to BK and picked up a game. True gamers won’t be satisfied by such simple games but I just wanted an non-violent “fun” game that would be safe and easy enough to play with my kid. In any case, I don’t know if it will be a financial loss but it’s great marketing. Although there’s BK branding throughout the game (especially the characters), I was surprised that they did not force any full-fledged advertising (ie. commercials).

And if you use the special unlock codes, the King goes around beating up hookers and shooting cops.
