Current, Yahoo partnership falling apart

Cory Bergman December 2nd, 2006

Just two months into a user-created video partnership between Current TV and Yahoo, it looks like the two are parting ways. “Current is exploring better opportunities to distribute our content,” Current TV spokesman Alex Dolan told News.com. And the Yahoo page on Current says it is no longer accepting uploads. Writes PaidContent’s Rafat Ali, “Not sure what happened, but one guess: lack of interest/traffic/uptake of the joint Yahoo Current Network site. Second guess: Current TV founder Al Gore is an advisor to Google, did they not think this through well enough?”

I would suggest your first observation is the correct one as the premise for the joint deal as you know was for Yahoo! to bring more eyeballs to the equation, they did not do this, even with marginally produced content by U2.

Current, is I think better off since they have a focused brand strategy geared towards more professionally generated content. If I were advising them, I would collaborate with established producers to create a micro-site within current to create more buzz in that community and partner with NeuLion to get their content into homes, this via their cable by-pass TV solution among other ideas.

didn’t terry semel come from tv???

unfortunately for yahoo, the site’s features are taking on that appearance.

much of the stuff that was simple to use has become a pain.

just because their email accounts are offered for free don’t make them worth the cost, you know?

“Better oppertunities?” To make a comparison to the TV world, this would be like a studio pulling their show off of FOX in hopes of ABC or CBS picking it up. But if the product just isn’t interesting, no one will watch. It’s. that. simple.

If, IF, CurrentTV fails, and it’s still a long ways off from that, it certianly wouldn’t be for a lack of trying on the part of Team Gore. They are definately trying to get people invested in this thing!

I blame it on global warming.

blame it on global warming if you like, but gore’s line on leno the other night is a classic… “hot glacier on glacier action”.
