Did he have OnStar?  If yes, why didn't it work?  Would it even work in the remote area if they didn't have it?

Did he they have a survival pack for winter driving?  Kitty litter, a shovel, blankets, flares, etc?

An "expert" comment in a package should relate how someone should be provided with the travel plan, in case something were to happen.  Any deviance in this path would mandate a phone call to a live person, informing them of a shortcut.</description>
