Weather, sports popular on mobile phones

A survey by MobileWeb Metrix found that people say they’re visiting weather and sports sites on their mobile phones at much higher rates than they visit online via their computers. For example, 22 percent of mobile users say they visit Weather.com, compared to 12.7 percent via computers.

So what does this mean? The end of computers perhaps? This is exactly what cell phones were made for beyond calling. Ever notice when you walk on a street, everyone is on a cell phone, including two people walking together talking to two different people. Cell phones help our dysfunctional society cope by not allowing them to actually be with themselves. They are great ways to waste time when you are alone. They keep the mind busy. The Sprint 2006 Sprint Productivity Survey found that 82% of cell users report using technology to make their downtime more enjoyable. So it makes perfect sense that things like checking the weather would be a phone accessory used often. It’s mindless chatter. The survey also found:
43% listen to music
40% call someone
39% check/send email
36% surf the Internet
31% play games
23% text/instant message

This should go even higher, as phone vendors adopt “widget” technologies - a little script on the phone invokes a very specific URL at the backend to provide small pieces of data - for example,a “live” icon with the current temperature in it that changes periodically. Widgets work better than full-scale browsing for small screens. Unfortunately, for some, they bypass advertising unless the widget itself is branded.
