WGAY-TV will be first gay-oriented over-air station
Steve Safran December 14th, 2006
Joining the ranks of cable channels that provide gay-themed programming comes the first over-the-air channel to target the gay audience. WGAY-TV in Key West launches in February, 2007. It’s a LPTV (low-power television station), but will be on Comcast Cable and on the internet.

”The biggest complaint the gay community has is the representation on mainstream TV,” Edwards said. “We’re either the butt of the joke or fashion designers.”
So in order to destroy the “butt of a joke” stereotypes, they’re launching shows titled “Desparate Poolboys” and “The King of Queens”?!
I’m probably not qualified to comment on that since I’m not gay, but doesn’t that seem like an insulting, stereotypical name? I’m sorry to say this but I laughed at those titles. They sound like gay-themed TV show names for an SNL sketch.

dave, wasn’t that a spoofing of program names by letterman?
was “drag”net one of the top-10?

Isn’t that what Bravo is for?

allen, this appears to be a locally focused station. that whole end of duval st. is geared for the gay community.
i could see how this would work as a low-powered ota station AND how their web channel could be a huge driver for the gay tourist industry world wide.
is anyone old enough to remember when key west was heavily cuban influenced? a small shot of cuban coffee and a cuban sandwich (whose name escapes me right now) sounds good for lunch.

I lived in Key West during my kindergarten year. I can still remember getting my 60’s flat top haircut at a cuban barbershop.

I got those names from the linked article…
I didn’t see the Letterman spoof. Sounds pretty funny though.

Here’s a question - what happens when people start complaining to the FCC? Are LPTVs exempt from that sort of hyteria?

I’d occasionally sit here in my desert clime, mix myself a couple of drinks and watch the sidewalk cam from in front of Sloppy Joe’s. I haven’t been doing it as much lately because after one hurricane or another, it switched from being full-motion video with sound to just a succession of still images. I personally look forward to any Key West local programming, if for no other reason, it’d give me a break from this place I currently call home.

sloppy’s has/had a sidewalk cam???
another s. florida favorite of mine is ft. lauderdale; left a lot of brain cells there in the late 70’s.
check out a beach cam mounted atop the sea lord hotel @ sealordhotel(dotcom)

Detroit - Now I’ve actually gone back and it looks like they may have worked through their issues because the live video with sound is back. You can get to their sidewalk cam and their stage cam via the Sloppy’s site, but in this particular instance, I’ve coded my name to lead directly to the full-motion video from Duval St.
And now that it’s back, later on this evening, I’ll have to mix a drink and watch.

BTW: For my serious drinking, I’m more of a Captain Tony’s kind of guy, but nothing beats people-watching from Sloppy Joe’s. There’s no place else like it, anywhere in the world.

that link is a keeper!
thanks!
my son and daughter loved our last trip to the keys (they grew bored of fort lauderdale and i secretly planned 2 days there as a break…tough life,eh?)
forwarded your link to each of them just now.
the “sloppy joe’s apparel” shop next door to the restaurant really got a workover while we were there, if my credit card recalls.
