Seattle windstorm spikes mobile use

Cory Bergman December 15th, 2006

We’re in the middle of a massive windstorm here in Seattle. Yesterday we promoted KING5.com’s mobile capabilities on our newscasts in anticipation of a massive power outage. Now over one million customers are without power, and our mobile landing page (which automatically redirects from KING5.com for users with mobile devices) is the second most popular page on the site behind the home page. And we’re running near-record traffic for the site as a whole despite the outage.

I live in Euclid Ohio and my daughter, son-in-law and cutie pie grandson are somewhere in your usually gorgeous city of Seattle. I didn’t realize that most of the city had no electricity until, not hearing from her since Wed eve that just maybe she has no electricity. Her phone still takes messages, don’t know how that works, but no email or phone calls. I heard on tv that 800,000 homes and businesses hadno electricity, and I tried to read the Seattle newspapers. I found you setting up electronically using olive, whatever that is. It works fine.

Bravo for the line workers getting thru the day and night, trying to get electricity on. Same for the firefighters and police, sewage workers, and neighbors helping each other.
