Top Google search of 2006: ‘Bebo’

Steve Safran December 20th, 2006

A stunning upset. A Cinderella story. An underdog… you get the idea. Google Zeitgeist has its top searches of 2006. The number one search on Google this past year? Bebo. The social networking site outsearched the number two term, MySpace. As for the number one Google News search term? As you would have guessed: Paris Hilton. (Clever headline from Australia’s Courrer-Mail: Hilton Most Hit Upon.) Orlando Bloom is #2 and you have to go down to #5, Hurricane Katrina, before you find a hard news story.

I was puzzled by this. A Google spokesperson clarified it for me, as if you check Google Trends, MySpace blows Bebo searches out of the water.

    Google’s response:

The reason for this is because the Google Zeitgeist is a regular look at an aggregation of the most popular and fastest-rising search queries as indicated by what people are typing in to their Google.com search box. Zeitgeist means “spirit of the times,” and Google search queries, when seen in volume, tend to reflect what is collectively on our minds day in and day out. People use Google to search for what’s new and interesting and top of mind.
Therefore, these lists are not necessarily the most top searched terms of 2006.

Wow, thanks for the excellent information!
