The high price used to be true (though it was worth it).

But there have been some recent comparisons of Macs and Dells where the Macbook was cheaper.

it’s what they have not introduced yet that might unlock more of apple’s true value. i can remember when the ipod first came to market and the battery issue was going to be the end of it.

Whatever the truth may be, that pricing also helps keep Apple viewed as being something special rather than merely a commodity. It would be great if Porsche lowered its prices, but it ain’t gonna happen.

For all of Apple’s attributes, particularly in the style category, they shot themselves in the foot long ago by refusing to license out the OS to other vendors. That keeps the Macs’ pricing at a premium compared to comparably-powered pc’s. And, it keeps me from buying one.
