SNL ‘Special Treat in a Box’ already #13 on YouTube

Steve Safran December 27th, 2006

The uncensored version of “Special Treat in a Box” (you know it by a slightly different name) is already the 13th most-watched video ever on YouTube. With more than seven million views, it should easily crack the top ten - and it has only been posted for a week. It is already YouTube’s most viewed clip from a traditional media outlet. Other “All Time Honors” for it so far: #2 Top Favorite, Entertainment; #40 Most Discussed; #5 Most Viewed, Entertainment-English; and a whole bunch of numbers ones for the month. Lesson: playing nice with YouTube is much better than suing YouTube. The publicity for this video (and hence, SNL) has been amazing.

The other lesson: videos with a big star using a naughty word are really, really popular. I should try uploading an uncensored version of my news stories!

I wonder what the stats are for the official version from the SNL website. While it may not be embeddable, it’s also not a camera pointed at a television that’s running the official clip.

(Personally, I linked to it both ways, but it was the YouTube version that I’ve seen most on the web)

    Oh - My bad.

I just clicked your link and it seems there’s now an officially-sanctioned version on YouTube. When I first saw the clip, it was a camera pointed at a television that was connected to a computer, but I now see that version has been pulled (v=ZiFtMNz6c60).

I’m sorry for the confusion and I’m glad that there’s an official version also on YouTube. I know that I sometimes scour CBS’ YouTubes to get a sample of their Ferguson’s that I’ve missed. I wonder how many people watch a “Late, Late Show” clips on Youtube, actually go to the official site to watch the full monologue and I wonder how many times the SNL skit has been played from NBC’s site and how much that would increase the stats.

After all, other than that one time on opening day, I’ve only watched the NBC version, myself.

(Once again, sorry for the confusion, but it doesn’t really dtract from my question)

I don’t think the success of the video has anything to do with Justin Timberlake saying the word “dick” over and over. It has more to do with the fact that the video is hilarious, well-written and shot, and has a very catching tune.

If NBC ever put ‘Lazy Sunday’ on You Tube it would be just as successful

not to be outdone, brittney will show everyone what’s in her box too.

The video is hilarious. I think it would be huge censored (I watched it that way first), but clearly, it’s huger uncensored.
