‘Diamond.com’ was highest selling URL in 2006

Steve Safran December 28th, 2006

You’d need a lot of diamonds to afford the rights to the diamond.com name. According to DNjournal, it sold for $7.5 million this past year, making it the highest amount paid for a URL in 2006. Vodka.com, which resolves to Russian Standard vokda’s site, sold for $3 million, (a heck of a lot of money for a redirect, no?). Other big ticket names were used for annoying Google-ads-only sites: Cameras.com snapped up $1.5 million, and the $500,000 sites wrestling.com, bike.com and blue.com are just traps for searchers. Also going for a half-mil was gays.com which looks to be under construction. And this note: typosquatting was big business, too, with mortage.com requiring a mortgage-like $242,000 and forclosures.com getting $150,000. Memo to Cory: Must purchase lostremoat.com, lostreemote and lostreemotez in 2007. (Via Freakonomics Blog)

yes, buy all the dotcoms you can; cyber real estate is about the only real estate going up these days.

would it be fair to say that only the “.com” versions are the ones worth owning???

oh, and a shout out to “dave” or “dan”, the lr commentor who pointed out the IMPORTANCE or registering your corresponding url as a youtube id. thanks.

i know i read that about a year ago elsewhere and dismissed it as hype…bad move.

to add to the discussion (and to play on the youtube bashing trend) one might argue that diamonddotcom’s price of $7.5 mil pales in comparison to that of another url that sold last year:

youtube sold for 200 times that amount and it was nothing but a url, right???

i mean, there’s no business model there, so…

I’m the proud new owner of lisabo.net. Once The Cosby Show decides to do a reunion special, I anticipate I’ll be able to sell it for millions and retire in my 30s. If you want to email me with offers, feel free to get in touch.

    Dan

    PS I own tonyben.net also.

Actually, diamond.com was an established site owned by Odimo Corp. which was sold to another diamond dealer. It was not just a domain name sale.

I own this domain and may consider selling, given current economic climate there must be a lot to say on the web.
