Saddam execution coverage: ghoulish?

Steve Safran December 29th, 2006

“Is there something ghoulish about this?” Larry King asked CNN’s Aneesh Rahman who is standing in Baghdad waiting for the execution of Saddam Hussein. Yes, of course. But this isn’t just prurient interest - it’s a major international story, obviously. The cable news nets are in “fill” mode, waiting for the execution which is reportedly going to happen any minute now.

My undergraduate degree is in Criminal Justice, and I did my senior paper on the “deterrence” aspect of executions. Of course, this is completely different from a ‘typical” execution of a convicted murderer, but I think executions should be covered on live TV.

We have movies that glorify violence and killing, but an exposed nipple fines a network thousands of dollars? Let’s broadcast all executions live, so we can see what real death looks like. Fox News can be the vanguard of this new level of “reality TV.”
