Yahoo Local is teaming with Dash Navigation to provide in-vehicle local search. The device (below) will operate off a cellular link — or Wifi when available — and will allow drivers to search for, say a restaurant, based upon the car’s location. “It really is a new implementation of mobile search,” says Peter MacDonald, senior director of business development for Yahoo Local. “People need to find information about local businesses and what’s around them not just when they’re at their PC.” (WSJ sub. required)

Merge the two companies and you have a media powerhouse. While Sirius wants a marriage, XM isn’t saying anything. Yet.

Just last night, we watched a victorious Boise State player propose to a cheerleader on live TV. What could be bigger, crazier? A man who goes by the initials J.P. wants to propose in a Super Bowl ad, “the most public declaration of love in the history of mankind,” says his website. Only problem is, he’s has to find someone to pay for it. The price? $2.5 million. Oddly enough, he might just find someone to do it.

It’s always so hard to come up with New Year resolutions, so I’ve done them for you. That’s right – everything you need to change for 2007 is right here, courtesy of Lost Remote. Your station or media outlet just needs to resolve to make the following changes for a prosperous New Year. Unlike most resolutions, however, these come with a warning: These resolutions are mandatory. There’s no excuse for breaking these resolutions. These resolutions learn from the mistakes of the past year or two, and they’ll even make you money (also a resolution) if you stick to ‘em. Happy New Year. Now then, repeat after me: “I resolve to… (do everything I learn, after the jump).”

ABC’s “World News” webcast turns one tomorrow, and the network is touting some big numbers. According to an ABC press release, the webcast “has been downloaded or played nearly 50 million times via iTunes and ABCNews.com.” Our usual caveats apply here: downloads do not neccesarily equal plays and plays do not equal “full plays.” Having said that, there are plenty of reasons to mark this milestone. For one, the fact that ABC News produces this specially for the online audience is laudable. The enhanced features of the iTunes version are also good. Full press release after the jump.

We’re a little late on this, but better late than never. FresnoFamous and ModestoFamous, two local citizen journalism sites, have sold to McClatchy’s Fresno Bee and Modesto Bee. Both sites were started by 26-year-old Jarah Euston, and they feature blogs, photos and forum posts submitted by users. “Purchasing a strong franchise such as Fresno Famous gives The Bee another way in which to reach younger readers with information they seek,” said Valerie Bender, vice president of custom publications for The Fresno Bee. “Our intention is to keep the high standard of blogging and information that has led to the success of Fresno Famous and to, over time, continue to grow the content and opportunities for citizen journalism on the site.” (Via PaidContent)

This might be it. CNN has since apologized. “I’m going to be calling Senator Barack Obama to make a personal apology,” said Wolf Blitzer. Obama’s press secretary thanked the blogosphere for bringing it to his attention. “Though I’d note that the ’s’ and ‘b’ keys aren’t all that close to each other, I assume it was just an unfortunate mistake, and don’t think there was any truly malicious intent,” Tommy Vieto said.

While the Washington Post has a continuous news desk which produces new stories online throughout the day, in January editors will be empowered with more web responsibility to approach their jobs as, “I’m not going to just think about like how it happens on the paper, but on the web and every platform.” The Post says the move will not take responsibilities away from the web team.

Some music industry executives are finally figuring out that their Digital Rights Management (DRM) strategies are anything but strategic, unless you count choking the life out of your business a strategy. Among the many predictions for 2007, Reuters thinks that the music majors will get the message and the DRM walls will start to crumble. It kind of makes me a little sad - I’ve always told newspapers and broadcast to not feel so bad about things because it could be worse: At least they’re not in the music industry, which has mangled every single digital move since the appearance of Napster. Fun fact: The uber cheesy ringtone market accounts for more than half of the current digital revenue stream for the music industry. Wait, make that a scary fact. How low-fi is that?
