Sirius pushing for satellite radio merger

Cory Bergman January 2nd, 2007

Merge the two companies and you have a media powerhouse. While Sirius wants a marriage, XM isn’t saying anything. Yet.

    Can you say “monopoly”?
The FCC will not permit more sat radio licenses.
    Only two companies allowed.
    The future?
How about higher radio licensing costs to
manufacturers? Or how about higher monthly
    subscription fees?
Or more commercial minutes per hour?

Mergers are almost NEVER good for consumers or
    vendors to those companies,
    only CEOs and their buddies.

Competition is what nature intended and
    nature will always win, ultimately.
Can you imagine Windows happening without
the Mac? Microsoft would still be churning out
MSDOS version 18. ( or 2004 XP ME RIP ).

Well, I for one am looking forward to paying more money to listen to the radio. My radio bill needs to be as big as my cable bill and my Internet bill.

We’ve been calling this one for years. It will happen. It has to happen. Financially, the two need to become one to be viable. The consumer could wind up with no choice instead of one choice if sat radio doesn’t become profitable.

steve, i have plenty of choice. i have online radio from dozens of websites (which i can rip to mp3 if i want with the right tools), i have my ipod, i have CD’s, tapes, even 8-tracks. I love satellite radio because i can give my friend $100 to add me to his master account and for a year I get tons of great music commercial free, talk and sports…. so, satellite might be in a conundrum… the price point is just right…. i think a better strategy is to do OEM thru new car sales, radios/subscriptions free, and stake their wagon to a few key advertiser-supported channels. sell aftermarket radios and subscriptions for remote units.

I have XM.. I have XM for a reason. I don’t like Siruis. I don’t think it’s as polished. I don’t like Howard Stern, I like having him somewhere where I never have to hear from him.

Just because Mel Karmazin finally realized he overpaid for “talent” does not necessarily mean that the two companies need to merge to achieve some far fetched “synergies”
