Jobs takes wraps off Apple TV

Cory Bergman January 9th, 2007

Formerly known as iTV, Apple TV is a nifty new wireless device that merges video, music and photos from multiple PCs to your television. It handles high-definition video (720p) and has a 40 gig hard drive built in. It will go on sale for $299 in February. The user interface (below showing movies from iTunes) looks downright snazzy…

    Lame!

The form factor should be a 17″ wide device–like the majority of HT components–not a small square like a video game system.

It could have a DVD player in it (or a empty bay for one), allowing users to subplant their existing consumer deck. With an AppleTV, you need yet another input on your TV…. and another remote on your coffee table. Newer HDTVs have multiple HDMI hook-ups, but they also have 1080p/i!

It should be a PVR (HDTV, of course). Being able to play itunes store material only (or stuff you’re willing to push thru iTunes), make this a niche product. The HDTV-PVR market doesn’t have a clear leader yet, so there’s room for sales here.
