Cory Bergman January 10th, 2007
Coming this Saturday, NBCSports.com will debut a 30-minute webcast called, “NHL on NBC Faceoff” that leads up to NBC’s live broadcast of its NHL games. There will be interviews with the team’s stars plus video of players warming up on the ice, as well as analysis from the web show’s hosts.

Interesting. Obviously streaming an entire hockey game over the web is not practical at this point in time. But, if you can create web-based components that can be added to an advertising package the “television” financial realities of sports like the NHL really begin to change. Particularly if the web-based components can provide measurement metrics that will allow you to sell those components at some premium.

We just found streaming an entire hockey game quite practical here in Canada, with the World Junior Hockey Championship from Sweden. The gold medal game (Canada vs Russia) on Fri Jan 5 at 1pm ET had 241,000 unique viewers, with a peak of 118,000 at the end of the third period. We did a 600Kb/s stream, locked down to Canada-only, via Akamai. Needless to say, we are going to be doing a LOT more hockey LOL

IB has been doing on demand and live streaming through Akamai for years. The final hockey game for the 2006 Olympics was streamed and Geocoded so Akamai streaming for NBCSports isn’t new.
Hmm, I’ll have to find an open proxy server in Canada and see if I can get the stream. I have a little experience with Akamai streaming and Geocoding.
