Blog readership much higher in Asia than the West

Steve Safran January 11th, 2007

Steve Rubel sends this surprising (at least, to me) study about blog readership that found that Japan, South Korea and China lead the way. The study, conducted by Edelman (where Rubel works), found that 74% of people in Japan read blogs. Compare that to 27% in the U.S. Also very interesting: 91% of the people Edelman determined are “influencers” read blogs in Japan but only 34% of American “influencers” read blogs. The study is part of a white paper Edelman has just published. (Download the PDF of this graphic here.)

Go to technorati. It has a series of deep data charts that show global growth…growth by region and country and growth by language.

Add that background to the edleman data and you get much, much better picture of this explosion.

Used this in presentations in India late last year and based on reaction, it communicates perfectly “the blog story.”

correction: 12 Asian blogs in the top 100

(apparently, my initial comment got flagged for some reason, so here goes again…)

Actually this isn’t much of a surprise if you’ve been following Technorati’s quartery reports. Last February, there were 12 Asian blogs in the Top 100. This was a first. Guys like Doc Searles were knocked from the Top 100 for the first time (something he remarked on at the citizen journalism unconference in August)

There wasn’t much speculation as to who these 12 bloggere are, but it was quite a shock. One even knocked BoingBoing out of the #1 spot.

I spoke to some Japanese reporters at the WOMMA conference re citizen journalism. Blogs and citizen journalism are viewed differently in Japan than in the US–mostl because it is considered in bad taste to stalk one’s neighbors with cell phone cams. So, while Edelman’s figures are interesting, it would be even more interesting to know what sorts of blogs Japanese readers go to regularly
