Netflix to stream movies online

Cory Bergman January 15th, 2007

Coming in the next six months, full-service Netflix subscribers will get 18 free hours a month to watch — but not download — movies online. “Because DVD is not a hundred-year format, people wonder what will Netflix’s second act be,” said Netflix’s chief executive, Reed Hastings. Netflix also believes users will sample more movies via the streaming video, which will improve their customer experience in selecting DVDs they want to watch.

I’ve been a Netflix customer for nearly two years now, and I believe this will definitely be a good move for the company.

I’d love to eventually be able to stream a movie from Netflix through an Apple TV directly to my television seamlessly.

Now if only we can work on speeding up those distribution channels from the studios…

This would get me to become a subscriber, since it doesn’t require me to make decisions about what I might like to watch on a Sat. night way in advance.

someone will figure out how to cache the stream and it will just end up back on torrent sites in no time.

Agree with Thomas. The second Netflix builds a better mousetrap for videos streaming online, some hacker will figure out how to crack the code to make the videos downloadable, shareable, burnable, whatever.

“Customers will sample videos on streaming to select better DVD’s?”

    For the last time….

    Attention Hollywood, Investors and Executives.

See that large device at the front of your living room?
The ones that now take VGA inputs? And the small one in the rear of my office, with the keyboard and mouse, the one that has RCA video/audio inputs?

I don’t care if it streams from a server in Peoria, or comes from a DVD in my collection, or is a .torrent of some independent film from 1978 that only one other guy has. I’m going to watch it however i want, wherever I want, whenever i want. Get it thru your heads.

    append to # 6:

i’d be happy to pay for it if you wouldn’t give me all the hassle of “pirating” it to do this…
