Apple TV selling faster than iPods

Despite the fact the product isn’t even out yet, Apple says its upcoming PC-to-TV device is the fastest-selling item on its website, even beating out iPods. Apple TV is poised to become a surprise hit, says analyst Shaw Wu of American Technology Research. “If Apple were to convert 1 percent of those iPod owners to Apple TV owners, it would be a success. That would be a million units,” he said. I’m also bullish on Apple TV — I’ve already bought one, too. It’s due out in February.

Adds Thomas in comments below, “I already do the same thing, pretty much with my Xbox 360 & Tversity, so I’ll save the $300.”

Obama announced presidential ambitions on Brightcove

Sen. Barack Obama used Brightcove to announce his intentions to form an exploratory committee, the first step in considering a run for president. Obama has done a deal with B’Cove for a broadband channel all his own. VERY smart. He gets a message out directly, and gets people to share and blog it easily. I’m so impressed that I’m posting it here, regardless of my politics.

As we reported yesterday, Brightcove just landed a whopping $59.5 million in funding. (Thanks, Buzzmachine.)

ABC.com leads network sites in unique streams

According to Nielsen-Netratings data for the months of October and November, ABC.com’s video of its primetime shows attracted 3.1 million (Oct) and 3 million (Nov) unique users, compared to CBS.com’s 1.2 million and 1.9 million, and Fox.com’s 640,000 and 676,000. NBC.com’s video wasn’t apparently enough to register on the Nielsen-Netratings data despite the fact NBC.com’s overall traffic is tied with ABC.com for the most-visited network site at 9.5 million monthly uniques. A little perplexing, but NBC just recently began to stream its primetime shows, and arguably the most popular online show, The Office, is not available on NBC.com.

MySpace, News Corp. sued in assault cases

You knew this was going to happen sooner or later. Four families of girls who say they were solicited and sexually assaulted via MySpace are suing the site and its owner, News Corp. The suits allege negligence, recklessness, fraud, and negligent misrepresentation. And in each case, criminal charges have been filed against the accused MySpace users and/or their accomplices for sexual assault, CNET reports. “In our view, MySpace waited entirely too long to attempt to institute meaningful security measures that effectively increase the safety of their underage users,” said Jason A. Itkin, a lawyer for the families. As we reported yesterday, MySpace is launching a new application for parents to monitor some of their teen’s activity on the site.
