It’s almost enough to turn me into a NASCAR fan. Coming on February 1st, NASCAR.com will launch with a new look and a very cool application called RaceView. While you’re watching a race live on TV, it tracks the cars within a few inches and replicates them in an animated, video-game-like display. Pick your favorite driver, listen to his in-car audio, watch his gauges, pick different camera angles and track his position all in real-time. “The RaceView application represents the first-ever live rendering of a major sporting event in 3-D, providing fans the most dynamic interactive experience ever developed,” said Hank Adams, CEO, Sportvision, which powers the technology. “RaceView is at the forefront of a new wave of convergence applications that will change the way fans interact with and watch with their sport.” And if RaceView is as good as this screen shot, he may be right. RaceView will cost ya $12.95 per month or $79.95 annually. Press release follows after the image…

So, which show did you watch live? Which did you record? In a primetime showdown, NBC’s Heroes and Fox’s 24 aired head-to-head at 9 p.m. last night. And if you watched Hereos, you saw a URL (PrimaTechPaper.com) and a phone number on a business card. Both work, and there’s plenty of discussion online about how to come up with the code to delve deeper into the site. It’s all part of NBC’s TV 360 strategy to energize fans from TV to the web and back again. Update: The ratings are in, and Heroes beat 24.

Google has teamed up with Warner Music and Sony BMG to distribute music videos with embedded Adsense video ads. Web publishers who want to participate can select the video they want from various available channels, post it on their sites and get a cut of the ad revenue along with the content provider and Google, of course. It’s an extension of a test with MTV Networks last year, and Google said more content providers are coming soon. “Participating publishers range from small to large, and cut across many different types of content,” explains the Google Adsense blog (sounds like a syndication opportunity for TV sites.) The video ads are running in a four-week test now underway.

I’ve done quite a few web trainings for broadcast journalists over the last year and I am still astonished by how few of them use a newsreader (news aggregator) or even know what one is! I like to think of them as a personalized wire service. Reporters and producers can widen their perspective beyond the AP, Reuters, and their local newspapers by taping into alternative publications, niche websites, and yes, blogs. Newsreaders help you scan more content tailored to your needs more quickly than visiting individual websites. My newsreader enables me to scan about 50 websites a day by visiting just one site. If I were a news director, I would practically mandate everyone in the newsroom set one up. Heck, they’re free. So why don’t you use one?

Sony Pictures Television says it’s thinking about shifting its resources from NATPE, the traditional TV programming conference, to CES. It’s amazing how the Consumer Electronics Show went from near obscurity in the media ranks to a must-attend conference in the matter of just a couple years. As for NATPE, well, let’s just say I haven’t felt the need to attend in years.

That’s the name of an upcoming show on Fox where adults will be quizzed with questions from elementary school textbooks. “While most game shows measure how smart you are, this is a show that will measure how dumb you are,” said Peter Liguori, Fox entertainment president. The show is the product of mega-producer Mark Burnett, and Fox says it won in the bidding for the show from the other networks.

Heroes is returning tonight, and NBC is bringing “TV 360″ to NBC.com with a bevy of new interactive features for the show. During the broadcast, viewers can log on to a two-screen application and participate in real-time. A character will give out access to a WAP (wireless) site. An ad on the site plugs the phone number for the fictional Primatech Paper Company, which viewers can call. And NBC.com will post a bunch of original video, such as cast commentary. “This is particularly exciting because it’s the most developed TV 360 application we’ve created for a scripted series, and the first to use this level of interactivity,” said Jeff Gaspin, President NBCU Cable Entertainment, Digital Content and Cross Network Strategy. Release follows…

News flash! A report by JupiterResearch found that most people who watch video online or on a mobile device prefer it without commercials. And they don’t want to pay for it. “There is that sentiment that people would, in an ideal world, want to live without any business model supporting the content,” said JupiterResearch’s Joe Laszlo. Imagine that.
