Most Americans say movie piracy no big deal

Some 59 percent of Americans in a poll said parking in a fire lane is a more serious offense than illegally downloading a movie. “Most people perceive celebrities and studios to be rich already and as a result don’t think of movie downloading as a big deal,” said Kaan Yigit, study director at Solutions Research Group. If that’s the way Americans think about movie downloads, you can only imagine what they think about downloading torrents of TV shows, which originate from free television.

    Perhaps it’s a fairly recent phenomenon, but I’m surprised by the numbers of people who will freely admit to downloading pirated content in a wide open forum.

    Sure, we’ve all heard somebody say they’ve done it and I’m kind of used to an occasional person saying that they’ve downloaded a current movie within the confines of a small blog or its comments, but the other day, I ran across someone who was either bold or fairly stupid.

    The occasion was that I was looking for some specific show information on CNET’s tv.com and though I go there a couple of times a week, the other evening, I decided to look at their show-specific forums.

    Right there in plain sight on one of the most-trafficked and highest-profile television sites in the world, somebody said in reference to a particular show and I quote, so it’s sic; “i have finally found a good torrent (eps 1-11) of this show and downloaded them, of course on the day my internet keeps going down-so took WAY longer than it should have, i’m up to episode 10 and so far i love it”

    Now, according to their profile, this person doesn’t live in this country, but stil…
