Boston panics, doesn’t realize prank is Adult Swim
Steve Safran January 31st, 2007
The media has been going nuts all day in Boston. About ten devices have been found, at first thought to be bombs, but then discovered to be hoaxes. Nobody has put together that it’s probably a “Mooninite” character from Aqua Teen Hunger Force. The lite-brite/circuit board devices have popped up all over the country. No media has put this together yet, but I’m willing to bet this is exactly what this is. (Thanks, Baker and Shawn) UPDATE: After an ENTIRE day of live coverage and city-wide disruption, Turner Broadcasting has released a statement explaining that it is indeed a Aqua Teen Hunger Force marketing stunt. I just did a phoner on the news to explain a little more. There is a BIG question here: why didn’t the police know? Why didn’t they get information from the other cities where this happened? How come it took Turner all day to tell Boston what was going on? The story was on national channels - didn’t any officials in other cities think to tell Boston officials? This is a security embarrassment, not a terrorist attack. UPDATE: It appears we may be the first to break the connection between the devices and the TV show. More coverage.

I hope the evil-doers at the Office of Homeland Security don’t yank Cartoon Network’s FCC license over this little fracas.
I love Robot Chicken.

I’m a little slow. Who made these hoax device things? Did fans make them, or did the Cartoon Network make them as some sort of marketing stunt?

Ha ha ha? It’s not funny. Why: If it had been some kids fooling around they’d each be looking at 20 to 50 years. I am all for just imposing the death sentence on Time Warner AOL (parent company of Turner Broadcasting, which is the parent company of Cartoon Network) just to remind our corporate overseers that we are all hostage to this ‘terrorism’ crap. If folks miss their Cartoon Network, tough. It would stand as a mute reminder that even the evil corporate scumbags who really run things are not above the law. It just blows my mind that everyone was SOOO serious when they thought it was a prank by individuals, and now that it’s been shown to be a ‘harmless’ prank by a Holy Corporation why… that’s OK! How come the marketeers didn’t bother to notify City and Fed authorities when they first came up with this stupid idea? Oh, yeah, because it’s illegal to jsut run around attaching weird evices to public structures, for the very reason that today was such a cluster f in Boston…

The funniest part of Rob’s comment is that he thinks that Cartoon Network has an “FCC license” that can be pulled.

Is it sad that no one else in other cities noticed these?

The placement of unauthorized electronic advertizing is vandalism, just like graffitti. What right do these vandals have to place this stuff on other people’s property without their permission. Between graffitti and this nonsense, our “environment” is becoming a garbage dump. Stop this “guerilla marketing” real fast and arrest and prosecute all involved. This is not a prank, it is defacing our environment and ruining private and public property. We need to learn the difference between artwork and defacement, between your rights and rights of others.

It’s people like Reade King that made it possible for Bush to be elected and re-elected.
And the fact the Boston authorities got so worked up over these devices shows their level of their intelligence and the effectiveness of Bush’s campaign of fear against America.
Anyone who spent 5 minutes looking at this thing would be able to identify it wasn’t a bomb. Did anyone question why anyone would put a panel of LEDs over a bomb?
There should be an investigation AGAINST the Boston Police for as to why they’re so incompetent.
Everyone goes on about this “post 9/11″ world. Which translates as “World of limited freedoms and repressed expression, so we might be able to save less lives than the number lost to people eating too much cheese.”

I can’t stop laughing, did anyone see the press conference where the two guys would only talk about 1970’s haircuts?
10. MagicPrime | February 1st, 2007 at 12:46 pm
Wow, If i would have seen one of these in my hometown i would have stolen it and kept it…. I would love to have a Mooninite hanging on my wall blinking and flipping me the bird

You think at least ONE person might have looked at it and said, “hey. That’s a CARTOON CHARACTER.” I agree with Lightspeed–the Boston police seem pretty incompetent right about now.

Boston officials are the laughing stocks of the world right now, and they’re lashing out at Adult Swim because they’re angry about being found out as incompetent. And as far as the “ruining the environment”/”graffiti” arguement, eventually, everyone who wanted one would’ve taken them, and the others would’ve been thrown away or more likely recycled. That’s how advertisment flyers (which AREN’T illegal) work, which is what these are. They were just utilizing the advancements of technology to be more effective, because as Americans, they can, and it is expected of them to use all the tools available to them in order to further their work and make it higher quality. As far as the person who wanted to make this a political debate: I voted for Bush, yet I know that those are cartoon characters, obviously, and the object they adorn is harmless, just as obviously, if not moreso. The attitude of fear in this country is deplorable, but don’t blame Bush. It’s not his fault. I blame ignorance, which knows no political party, race (it seems besides human), creed, or gender.

Come on people. I think most people will agree that this is harmless, as far as why the authorities were not notified, its probably because they didn’t think they needed to be. They were up for 3 weeks before anyone reported/said anything. if they had been bombs, everyone would have already been dead. Not that any terrorist in his right mind would have put a big blinking sign giving you the finger on a bomb. It all reminds me of the This bike is a pipe bomb sticker incidents. the fact that is sticks out should mean that it is not a bomb. I mean, think about it people. so, if adult swim or turner broadcasting or even the perosn who put those up gets charged, everyone who didn’t realize this was ridiculous after seeing what it was, even those who didn’t know it was from adult swim should be charged as well. and yes, i know stupidity isn’t a crime, but since when has that stopped the government from trying.

while i can understand peoples obvious reaction. nobody has a sense of humor anymore. its your own faults for taking everything so seriously. quite frankly i find this to be probably one of the funniest things ive ever heard and for someone to say the need to be jailed for it is rediculous. you should be jailed for even bringing it up

Let’s face it everyone…no mistake was made!!! In lieu of our tenuous current culture and uncertanties presented over the years (especially, post 9-11,) the actions taken by the Boston officials were warranted! If the careless & egocentric advertising agency responsible would own up to an ill advised campaign & make restitution… business maturity will be shown. To deny responsibility and blame the client … (Turner Broadcasting & Cartoon Network) would be a mistake that they will live to regret.
The cartoon by the way is rubbish. Tried to enjoy it…. but whoa… found it painful. Essentially the same as I found the 2 “hairy” individuals who were arrested and would not answer media queries unless they were “hair” related. Please!!!!
Lesson to be learned here…ask carefully beforehand what job you’re undertaking!!!!

This just shows: 1)How provinical Boston REALLY is
2)How cool the Moononites are
3)How “the war on terror” makes people overreact
4)How a Lite-Brite can still be Fun,fun,fun!
5)How the media instigates “much ado about nothing”
& last-6) Why EVERYONE needs to watch ATHF,biyatches!

I don’t think Boston “panicked,” nor were the police incompetent. Unusual devices were found where devices did not belong, and it seemed to be a coordinated event. Boston took responsible action. 9/11 did happen and it did change the rules. Some rather forget that and watch cartoons. These are the same people who get their political opinions from stand-up comics and The Daily Show. Then they call Bush stupid, go figure.

They’re damned Lite Brites. Snazzy-ass Lite Brites of cartoon characters. Whoever mistook them for bombs is absolutely retarded and should be shoved into the Charles while wearing a brick suit. Seriously. There’s something in their water, or their Sam Adams, or their chowdah, or every person who called 911 is the spawn of siblings who bred. Something is wrong with them. This is the stupidest panic since the “War of the Worlds” radio broadcast.
If terrorists are going to place a bomb, people, it’s not going to look like a Lite Brite. It’s going to look innocuous and then kill people, not be shiny and flashy and attract attention to itself. This is why people in other, non-inbred cities did NOT makes panicked 911 calls, because they actually pay attention to the news and have half a clue.

I am an ultra conservative. I have been since I was 15 and read 1984. I am now 40. I see this as a tremendous over reaction by the Boston Keystone cops. I honestly see this a an overblown reaction to power hungry people who can’t see themselves as silly. If this had been interpreted as a threat by 9 other large cities around the country the respose would have been warranted. Boston was the only entity that displayed no commmon sense. This was even displayed at the arrainment of the 2 innnocent men. Their judge should have said this is silly and dismissed it then and there. Come on get a life. This was no different than high school president campaign flyers.

go to a country with a bomb problem (i.e. - Israel) and ask them how funny they think this is.
23. Mike Hughes | February 2nd, 2007 at 11:56 am
I bet a lot of folks wish Logan airport in Boston would have panicked over harmless little box cutters a few years ago.
24. BigM | February 2nd, 2007 at 1:48 pm
What kind of idiot can’t tell a lite brite from a bomb, not to mention that although these cartoons are not mainstream the boxes with pictures of these characters are in every Best Buy, Target, and Walmart in america.
25. Mike Hughes | February 2nd, 2007 at 1:51 pm
Probably the same kind of idiot who couldn’t tell the difference between a piece of junk mail and a uni-bomber bomb, couldn’t tell the difference between a letter and an envelope full of anthrax.

I feel that this prank or advertising scheme or whatever is all a bit stupid, both in the implementation of the stunt and in Boston’s reaction to it. If you’re trying to drum up publicity for your show, that is NOT the way to go about it… Who except for ATHF fans knew who the Mooninites were before all of this? I think that the “perpetrators” also could have at least let the police and other entities know what was going on just to cover themselves legally; I saw a three-minute flick of them putting the signs up in the middle of the night, and I see no reason why they couldn’t have swung through a cop stop and said something during their little adventure. With all that said, I don’t believe that the city should come down on them as hard as they’re talking, for they had absolutely no intent of harming anyone. I could see how one could think those things were some sort of bomb, but I’m absolutely sure that they weren’t thinking that when they were putting the signs together. All in all, I’m not affected; I’m still a loyal Aqua Teen fan, and I will always be waiting for a new episode (even if they do get thrown in jail for a while!)

Hey, I thought I would make a comment that would not be read by anyone at all, and express my opinion. Anyone who disagrees with me is a stupid fool and needs to go back to grade school.
If anything, they need to be charged with vandalism. I love the cartoons, trust me. Aqua teen, Metalocalypse, and eh….Those are the only good ones, I guess. Robot Chicken too….but anyway, I thought it was funny how they made statements about hair seeing as they couldn’t about the real matter at hand. Though it may have been a bad move, giving people the impression their a couple of jackasses who don’t care, it was still funny.
28. calen knauf | February 10th, 2007 at 4:12 am
why do people keep calling them hoax devices or pranks? How is it even a stunt? its a fucking light up image of a cartoon character! even if you dont know the show how could you ever in a million years connect that to terrorism. I would be increadably embarased if I were from boston. To think that the people running the justice system there are supposed to be educated people blows my mind, and the fact that the rest of the city is taking them seriously is retarted! I thank god I live in Vancouver!
29. calen knauf | February 10th, 2007 at 4:23 am
I read more of the comments and I had to coment again.”charge them with vandalism” Fuck you! you dont deserve a place in society! these are the people that make life interesting. What the fuck would you talk about at you r boring ass job the next day? maybee haow you walked to work and saw nothing but the same old shit you see day in and day out” oh a street! oh a building!” STAY INDOORS! I dont even live in the us and this shit is making my blood boil!

You should really thank Reade King for his insights. If you don’t understand them, maybe take a few months off from your submissiveness to idiotic authority (which can be quite a hoot, I admit) and re-reade his message. Thats what I did, And now I am once again aligned with many silly ideas that actualy make more sense than the party line. And I violate grammatical rules on whim. Go figure.
I (now) think Peter and Sean (the perps) deserve places in the cultural hall of fame. February had gotten pretty boring untill they paralized Boston with bad sculptures of relatively unknown cartoon characters.
And just think if they had put up the corporate mouse everywhere under bridges and by the road or in your nostrils? No-one would have noticed–at all–the corporate mouse–made of flashing LEDs–so what–no big–so not the drama–so very last millenea. The corporate mouse is already everywhere, like air, no one notices anymore.
Pass the schlock, please.
