Wal-Mart video downloads a ‘game changer’

Cory Bergman February 6th, 2007

Wal-Mart has launched a video download site that for the first time offers movies from all five major studios (gee, I wonder what leverage they used to sign those deals?) Wal-Mart’s new store not only offers the widest selection but also lower prices than iTunes and Amazon’s UnBox. “We are talking about the beginning of the end for DVDs,” said Rob Enderle, an independent analyst at the Enderle Group. “The need to buy discs will not go away, but it will cut into any growth the market has.”

Saw a post online, maybe in Digg, that Wal-Mart’s site does NOT work for Firefox users.

And Amazon and Tivo just announced something that will allow you to buy at Amazon’s site and download to your Tivo.

I’m still trying to figure out what Blockbuster was doing by spending $2.5 million on a Super Bowl ad. Are they the next PetSmart or whatever pet food company died out in cyberspace.

Is the content going to be edited like it is at their brick-and-mortar stores? If so, I’ll avoid buying movies there as well.

Other items that signal the “beginning of the end for DVDs”: HD-DVD, blu-ray, iTMS, AppleTV, Tivo.

Rob Enderle is a horrible human being, swinging wildly from highly obvious “predictions” like this one or completely unsubstantiated garbage positioned solely to rile people up.

Do you get just the movie, or the extra features that the dvd includes as well?

It doesn’t. It doesn’t even load properly.
