Snickers scrubs Super Bowl ad site

Cory Bergman February 7th, 2007

Ooops. That Snickers commercial (video) during the Super Bowl that featured two mechanics kissing unintentionally then trying to shake it off like it was the kiss of death, has drawn some fire from gay and lesbian groups (and I imagine many conservatives didn’t like it either.) So now Snickers has pulled down most of the content on the site, AftertheKiss.com, that featured alternative endings to the ad, one of which is the mechanics beating each other with wrenches. OK, does anyone test this stuff with real people first? The backlash was entirely predictable, and Snickers and its ad agency deserves it for being so detached from today’s reality.

Personally, I didn’t find the commercial funny and the folks at Snickers are idiots for not seeing this one coming. Yea, where was the testing?

I figured the Carlos Mencia / “No English” ad would have caused a problem but I’m a white guy, and I’m afraid to do / say anything these days.

At least they didn’t hang Lite-Brites with a Snickers logo around Boston. That would’ve been the wort thing they could do!

I thought it was funny, but I guess political correctness wins again.

imagine if it were two girls kissing.

it would be everywhere rather than nowhere.

That’s because lesbianism is accepted because it’s hot. Two guys kissing? Well, that’s just gay.

A side of effect of men ruling the world. :-)

I am with Echy on this. I thought it was especially provocative since the inspiration for the mechanics’ mutual desire was a brown turd-like object. Talk about a shit-eating grin.

Look at all the extra coverage that has been generated — good or bad doesn’t really matter anymore. Has Snickers put out more clever ads in the past? Yes. Can you tell me you remember even one of them?

For the record, the 4 macho men that I watched the game (and commericals) with thought it was funny.

Which do you think the right wing hated more- Snickers men kissing or Janet Jackson’s boob?

Wow…good question. Hmmm….either way I think the ad worked for Snickers. It generated contrevorsy and extra free press, but it’s to being seen as being done in a malicous fashion and it wasn’t too deflamatory. People are just pretty much saying what where they thinking. The general public is seeing it as a goof-up as opposed to Snickers being anti-gay.

So Snickers gets the extra press and they don’t get boycotted? But how could any one boycott Snickers they are full of yummy goodness? But I guess I am boycotting Snickers for the next couple weeks, until I eat through my girl scout cookies. Nevermind.

And I am still stuck on Alyssa’s question.

GEAR SHIFT: I prefer Milky Way. Charleston Chew is my favorite. Spontaneous LR Poll, anyone?

Geez, I’m gay and I thought it was funny. I took the ad as not being so much as anti-gay but as the two guys being so stupid. If anything is was anti-male.
