ABC, ‘Lost’ ratings dropping fast
Cory Bergman February 19th, 2007
Earlier this year, ABC was the highest-rated network. Now it’s in a third-place tie with NBC. Other than success on Thursday night with Grey’s Anatomy, the network has experienced big declines. Ratings for Lost are way down, in part perhaps because many fans were upset that the show took a three-month break (OK, Lost fans who read LR, what do you think?) And most of ABC’s new shows have flopped. TVWeek has some advice for the network to get back on its feet.
Adds 7odd in comments:”Lost’s problem wasn’t the hiatus. Lost’s problem is the show isn’t really any good anymore. There’s extensive bitterness on the web about how poorly this show is run. It’s slow pace, lack of any answers, out and out dropping of mysteries, killing off likable characters, keeping around annoying characters, crappy dialogue, I can go on and on about how bad Lost went.”

During the midseason break, I found I really didn’t miss “Lost” all that much.
I watched the return episode and thought it was ok, but I fell asleep in the middle of it last week and haven’t bothered to seek it out on ABC.com to see what I missed.
The show has too many characters and far too man plot threads. It really feels like it’s dragging.

Agree with Chris.
They’ve killed off, what, three women and the one guy, and who else, and oh, did they knock that one off, too?
The show has Jumped The Shark. Have Fonzie jet ski with Gilligan & The Skipper and end this thing already. What’s next? Thurston B. Howell III to buy the island and then Papillon come ashore on his make shift raft.

I’ve pretty much given up on Lost. The first part of the season was pretty dreadful, and they direction they’ve taken the plot is not exciting at all.
It seems to be suffering from the same thing Alias did.

Another problem with Lost is its 10 pm time slot sure i can TIVO it or watch it on the web but by 10pm many of us are ready to go to bed or are falling asleep in front of the Box .

With ABC all but abandoning Friday and Saturday’s schedule, perhaps running lost again on one of those night’s is a possible way to revive interest in the show.
7. Patrick B | February 19th, 2007 at 11:31 am
I’ve watched every episode of Lost, and will continue to do so until it’s canceled.
I do hate the three-month hiatus though. And that 10 p.m. time-spot is a b*tch.

I love Lost and will watch til it’s over but they really did a number on the show this season. They had a responsibility to make the first 6 eps dynamite. They had promised a shattering cliffhanger. Neither things happened. It’s a shame, really. They were doing everything right until the show was a hit. Suddenly everyone got raises up to 90K per ep, then we barely saw anyone ever again and they introduced all these new secondary and cheaper characters.
They have got to do something and soon.

I disagree with many of the comments here.
Lost is still an interesting and engaging show that I look forward to watching every week.
Thank god there are shows on TV that make me think when I watch them.
You can keep American Idol and I’ll keep watching Lost.
But I’m not blind and unfortunately, the future may not be bright because at this point, Lost is not going to grow more audience.
To keep the show going, the network needs to pick a spot and leave it. I hope the creators are allowed to stick to their original five season plan. If those two things happen, I’ll remain a happy Lost viewer.

I’m kind of angered at the arrogance at the Lost creative team. If you’re going to only air six episodes in the fall season and put most of your eggs in the spring season, you’ve got to GIVE US A REASON TO COME BACK. I stopped watching before last fall’s final episode.
As much as Jericho is branded as a Lost rip-off, I enjoyed it much more than than I did Lost this past fall, and I look forward to its return this Wednesday. The Lost episodes just keep piling up in my Season Pass.

Since the hatch was opened and the reveal of the big experiment, I’ve lost interest. The show has dragged on since then, with flashbacks that provide as many questions as they do answers. It’s obvious that the show runners are going to ride out the current plot until the gravy train hits the final stop. Since the return of new episodes, I’ve been DVRing and fast forwarding through the show.

The writers of Lost have really backed themselves into a corner. They’ve made it almost impossible for any new viewers to come into the show and have any clue as to what’s going on. In the meantime, they’re creating all this bad will towards the show by creating all these outrageous mysteries and cliffhangers that are never resolved or even mentioned again (remember the polar bears? the smoke monster? the researchers in the arctic? etc, etc. When’s the last time we’ve seen any of them?)
In order to make this show survive, the writers need to start answering some of these questions FAST. This could bring back some of the viewers that dumped them and help bring some of the newer viewers up to speed without making them shell out ca$h for two season’s worth of DVDs.
13. coffee | February 19th, 2007 at 6:55 pm
I understand ABC’s impetus for the hiatus: in a heavily serialized show, the break allows them to air the rest of the season without reruns. “24″ uses a similar strategy: starting much later in the season in order to run without repeats at all. Unfortunately, ABC seems to have forgotten what happened with the pacing of the last season of “Alias”. Combined with the later time and the failure of “Daybreak” in “Lost’s” former spot, I can understand the lower ratings. In an ideal world, the quality of the show wil bring viewers back in again. I’m still watching.
14. Don Day | February 19th, 2007 at 7:13 pm
Lost lost me. I LOVED it - watched the first season on DVD in weeks - and as season two dragged along… I just began to lose interest. I watched the “mini-season” - but it just injected a bunch of new storylines I didn’t care about. It’s very close to losing me for good.
Shame.
15. Kyle | February 20th, 2007 at 5:00 am
I think ABC got greedy when LOST became a hit.
I remeber reading somewhere that the story “arc” was only to be two or three seasons in length. Once it became a hit, ABC wanted more…. too much more. Now the storylne has been watered down into really nothing more than backstory flashbacks and mini nuggets of “real” story.
TV Guide needs to develop a new ASTERISK to go along side episodes of LOST to let us know when a genuine LOST episode is going to be on Vs. a filler episode. Or maybe ABC could be a little more honest with us and offer the non cereal filled episodes online that contain only the good stuff.
16. Hussman | February 20th, 2007 at 7:17 am
I still like Lost and will still continue to watch it. Sure the pace has changed and characters have changed, but maybe that’s all part of the plan?
And anyone who thinks ‘Jericho’ is better than ‘Lost’ is kidding themselves. I like ‘Jericho’ and some of the mystery in it, but some of the “off-the-shelf” plots (”I’m in love with another woman.” “I’m pregnant.”) really put a drag on the show.
Not to get into a schlong waving contest over shows, but ‘Lost’ is still one of the best done shows on TV.
17. Joe | February 20th, 2007 at 7:33 am
This sounds like Twin Peaks all over again, except with more skin and less fun.
18. Michael Gorman | February 20th, 2007 at 3:06 pm
I can see what you’re saying Hussman, good points. Six months ago, I wouln’t have been just kidding myself, I’d be insane.
I guess I’ll liken it to watching one of Michael Jordan’s comebacks with the Wizards. He used to be hands-down THE best player, but he got a bit heavier, a bit distracted, a bit slow. Sure you get a glimpse of the magic that was from time to time, and comparitively he still wasn’t that bad, but most of the time, it just makes you sad about what he had come to.
19. Tom Simpson | February 22nd, 2007 at 10:06 am
Ya’ll are just plot twist Ho’s. Every episode can not answers all the questions. There is an ebb and flow to any tv program. Geez just think if Gilligan got off his Isalnd at the end of the first year. THEN IT WOULD BE OVER! DUH…
Deal with it folks.

How bad is Lost? I watched Hero back to back with Lost last night. In the first 5 min if Hero, Claire’s once real father turned out to be just a company man that took her in as a 3mo old, “The Hatian” that could erase one’s memory played mute and elected not to earase her just to protect her, the unstable radioactive character looses his cool and threatens to go nuclear if he doesn’t get answers — by the end of the show in stunning dramatic fashion, Claire who can repair herself, walks through a now exploding Mr. Radioactive, burns off her skin, close and hair (brilliantly done) to save the day. As she walks out of the now burnt to a crisp house you see just what recooperative powers she has, as she regrows, skin, tissue and hair. During the same 1 hour, oh year two people fom lost rowed in a boat between islands fo 20 minutes “we have to go back for Jack”. They’ll do it without me…..

Personally, I think lost is a great show! Sure it has changed but all shows do Im sure that it will have many new and exciting things to come and Im looking forward to it. I get up at 6 every day and to go to bed at 11 is bad, but ill do it for lost. and even if the show gets worse ill still watch it because who can resist to look at matthew fox’s gorgeous face. Im a devoted fan who will watch it till the end which hopefully wont come for a long time. I LOVE LOST!!!!

First season-Entertaining. Second season-Rotten. The third-sooo boring. Please cancel this show. Put it out of its misery. The 12.8 million audience tells you what everyone has said since the second or third ep of the second season-the show is over.
Shame on the writers for bringing in SO many new, lame characters. We don’t care about the jerky Others! Especially Juliet and Ben. They try to get “sympathy” for these evil characters-hey it failed majorly. They stink. They’re evil for what they do.
Desmond is a bore, some character they threw in for apparently no reason. They wasted the finale last year with two hours on him. Do we care about a character just added to the show who really gives nothing to it, except sitting around fire and drinking? Making corny predictions.
Who cares? Move it to Saturday, the lowest ratings night. No one will watch regardless. It puts most of us to sleep. Too many characters, too many plotlines, too much filler.
The only characters I cared about were ALL in the first season. They have watered them down into weaklings who can’t do anything for themselves. They have no personality, nothing.
Wonder what the ratings will be next week? Hopefully even lower so that ABC understands it is time to write the end of the show, or just pull the plug completely now.
24. D | March 15th, 2007 at 10:06 am
You’ve got to be kidding me—-the 12.8 millions audience tells you the show is still a hit——not that it needs to be cancelled.
I find it pathetic how people complain about how they can’t stay on top of all the storylines and characters. Is it really the fault of the show or maybe your mind isnt capable of handling such layered concepts.
You don’t have to keep track of every little detail going on. Thats where people make the mistake and that where they get frustrated. As long you know whats going on and the main points thats all you need. The rest will be revealed. People are soo impatient.
25. noname | March 15th, 2007 at 12:40 pm
everything is getting serielized… it’s suck. why can’t we just make nice intense series without dragging it. ok make one two seasons tops and come up with some new ideas for another show. i see majority of people could say ‘oh i wish it would go forever’… so many nice shows were canceled or got so boring because it lasted too long. Just go for a quality not for a hope to get more money…
26. Ryley | March 15th, 2007 at 3:09 pm
I am upset that lost really hasn’t given us anything to continue watching it. every show seems very slow moving and nothing really happens. get on with it give me something to want to watch the show next week.
27. Hollie | March 18th, 2007 at 9:19 pm
I didn’t discover LOST until last summer. Truly, it was misrepresented. I thought it was a bunch of people making out in the jungle. I watched the first 2 seasons in 4 days. It was stunning.
To tune in on season 3 and have nothing but flashbacks, and then the hiatus… and to realise that 800 days of my life equals only 41 of theirs… come on, now.
I liked it so much when the island had its own powers. Everything sucks now. I think all they can really do is wait to get canceled and then reveal a “magic, mindblowing” ending showing everyone waking up in a virtual reality chamber.
I won’t be tuning in for that one.
I liked your writeup on Heroes vs Lost, Bimmer. So, so so so true.
28. Idemandashrubbery | March 20th, 2007 at 5:10 am
‘ find it pathetic how people complain about how they can’t stay on top of all the storylines and characters. Is it really the fault of the show or maybe your mind isnt capable of handling such layered concepts.’
Eh….lost fans have been into the show BECAUSE of the layered concept, it started out with a huge cast and interactions + the island + the others +…
That isn’t/wasn’t the problem. The official board of Lost, The Fuselage, was full of people stating intelligent theories and in general having polite and decent conversation, with actors like O’Quinn popping in etc.
Then it became a hit, ABC said ‘drag it out, and hell, throw in some romance…love triangles! They always work’, made relationships VERY prominent while no-one was waiting for it, and nowadays, everyone is talking how bad it became. Except on the official thefuselage board, which is now full of teenagers fighting over who Kate truly loves in true ‘I luv Sawieyer!!11 Kat shud lub im!’ style.
29. richardh | March 26th, 2007 at 7:51 am
this so has moved along so slow this year. I am almost to the point of not watching it, don’t get me wrong its still alot better than most of the shows of tv nowadays, but it has turned into a please pick-up the pace I got other things to do show, but you watch it anyways type show. Please ABC stop with the fillers and flash backs and just friggin answer the open questions. & mysteries, but before its tooo late.
30. David | March 29th, 2007 at 12:46 pm
I became a Lost fan late and purchased the first two seasons and watched them both back to back, Now I am really getting tired of the filler eps and even worse the seperation of the main charactors, who wants to see Hugo in every episode! I don’t know about everyone else but it seems that every 10 minutes is a comercial. Now I am to the point were I Record it and watch two weeks at a time because its not worth sitting through it for an hour. IF your looking for better shows start watching the FX Channel.
31. Emily | March 30th, 2007 at 12:48 pm
I think that with Lost you get a little bit of everything and that’s why it appeals to everyone. It’s one of the only shows that leaves you breathless after each episode ending - that many shows only have suring the finale - and leaves you stunned and wanting more and more each time.
I think that the amount of characters and depth into the character’s backgrounds in done in such an interesting way and even during that one incident the flashback revloves around, you find out so much and empathise with them more and more. The long dragged out exploration of the characters, makes it so worthwhile when it gets to the character you like and also makes it so much more realistic.
One person mentioned the separation of the main characters and I think if they weren’t separated and just kept together in a bubble, then fans would be complaing even more. And this just makes it more worthwhile when they are back together.
I think that a few weeks into the second part of the third season, the pace really picked up and now I’m bracing myself for an amazing season finale.
Someone also mentioned relationships. If people are gonna be stuck on an island for 60+ days, they are going to discover relationships. They aren’t just gonna sit around by themselves in a tent. Realisticly, if you were stuck with the same bunch on people in a space for 2 months, wouldn’t you form relationships with any of them?
And of course it’s getting seralized…IT’S A SERIES. It also builds up suspense and tension. It would go too fast if it was crammed into one or two seasons, and the numerous characters wouldn’t have been explored in such depth: one of the unique features of Lost.
32. Damian Spooner | March 31st, 2007 at 9:45 pm
Lost was interesting when followed by Invasion
The two together made for a matinee double feature type thing
My wife was really pissed when they ended that.
peace - the smelly reziDue
33. Sara Faith | April 7th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
Quit trying to solve the riddle!!!! Go with the flow - get out the popcorn and enjoy the ride, for Pete’s sakes! It is a
TV show , for entertainment purposes only. All these Yahoos out there trying to solve the hidden meanings in
episodes and putting out spoliers - calm down already.
I personally like to not know where the show is going -
I consider it an adventure every week and am confident the twists and turns will pay off in the end.
34. Pam | April 11th, 2007 at 10:39 pm
I believe ‘Lost’ is an excellent show that continually keeps me on the edge of my seat. Having said that though, I do find myself frustrated by the writers of the show who believe we are not sharp enough to notice that two characters, Rose and Bernard, just fell off the face of the earth this season. I feel somewhat betrayed and more than a little insulted by that.
35. Alex | April 14th, 2007 at 5:11 pm
Alright well, you have to agree the last few have been pretty good, I mean, they killed off two uninteresting characters, they explained that juliet is not to be trusted and knew about it all, they’re doing better…
but, anyone remember that statue with 4 toes…. yeah…. never heard about that again, or the researchers in the artic, I mean, the polar bears were explained a bit, but not very much… and of course the smoke.. I think they’re listening to concerns though because this season has been picking up
36. Mike | April 19th, 2007 at 1:09 am
Lost is still great. Loyal Lost fans like me will continue to watch it because we care about the characters and the story. It’s the best story of any show on TV and it’s worth watching. Please don’t cancel it, let it finish out all it’s seasons. We’ve got to know how it turns out. At this point not letting us know what happens would just be cruel.
37. nick | April 20th, 2007 at 5:59 pm
I think the producers of the show did deliberately try to drag out the show with the second series, but i think all the mysteries which have not yet been explained will be,
remember the tapes from the second series with all the different stations on, psychology, parapsychology zoology and so on, all these stations are yet still to be discovered and i think its these stations which will reveal the mysteries of the island, and the likes of the the polar bears, visions and so on, the others work for metalurgy and are not part of the hanso foundation which funded the dharma initiative, what happened to the initiative we do not know but neither do the others, they too are looking for answers to the island emplyed by a new company
38. nick | April 20th, 2007 at 6:04 pm
all the visions they are having will be something to do with the parapsychology and the polar bears and so on will be to do with the zoology labs, thats why the shark had a mark on its fin, it will have most probably been engineered by the hydra station!
39. Kaz | April 30th, 2007 at 3:51 pm
You people are all crazy, this is the greatest show that has ever been created, well that and Smalleville. I can’t even sleep right cause i’m too busy dreaming about what the hell this island’s secrets are.
40. Paul | May 10th, 2007 at 5:45 pm
Man it’s been a tough year but they are finally bringing things together in these last episodes. Hang in there two more weeks and you’ll get your fish-biscuit.
Those arctic, possibly antarctic, scientists that placed a phone call to the woman sleeping in bed imediately after Desmond turned the key? Well that woman was Desmond’s extremely wealthy fiance who set up a rescue mission bringing a ship just a few kilometers off the island.
The happiest most uplifting installment in season three was when Hurly got the microbus running on the road to Shambalah only now to have it revealed that the coarpse inside it was none other than patricide victim Ben/Henry’s father.
Now whats up with all these “Wizard of Oz” refferences? The smoke monster that killed eko took the form of a twister. Ben used to be Henry, you know Dorothy’s uncle Henry Gale. Last nights episode was even titled “The Man Behind the Curtain.”
And John. OMG John! He’s laying on his back in an open pit grave on top of all the original Dharma Initiative’s coarpses with a gunshot wound to the gut. John’s not dead. oh no…..i hope not………
41. Dennis | May 16th, 2007 at 9:03 am
I could tell Lost was “lost” after the first few episodes … just spinning out endless storylines about people who insist on trusting people who keep screwing them … professional wrestling handles the same approach much more effectively!
The final episode will show that the whole thing was just a dream some bank teller had when he fell asleep during his lunch hour …
And all of the Lost fans will yell “That’s NOT FAIR!” … and then they will say … “so what else is on ?”
42. Marauder | May 23rd, 2007 at 8:38 pm
That’s it! I’ve had it with this show! Not only does it drag on longer and longer and keep asking questions instead of giving some answers, but I feel I’ve been betrayed by being lied to. Early on in the show, Lindelof made the statement that Dominic Monaghan was the only character that had job security due to his loyal LotR fans (Yes, of which I am one) and now he goes back on his word and kills Charlie! Not only that, but a character that was suppose to be dead from the beginning (Jack, whom I can’t stand) gets to not only live, but we see a future in which he survives. You mean I’m stuck with that jerk making it through. Jack should’ve died in the beginning like he was suppose to and, not only that, but I’m angry that I just sat through 2 hours of more of his insipid storyline. Enough already! Hey, writers of Lost, take a few tips from the writers of Heroes, now my favorite show on television and the one I’ll stick with instead of Lost now.
43. trina | May 29th, 2007 at 1:00 pm
I watched the other seasons of Lost, but this season I didnt watch because the time was CRAZY. I couldnt stay up that late and make it up at 5:30 to go to work. I did TIVO it but never got around to watching. Please change the time back to 8 or 9.
44. Alex W | July 6th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
I agree and disagree. Lost writers have dragged this on a little too much. Some people will say “more than a little” I know. I love this show. It makes you think and wonder what will happen next. I don’t, however, like waiting for something to happen and finally get finished in 3 weeks with 3 episodes. Thats not fun, but I still watch. Also, it has gotten to the point where they might as well cut out the past visions because they kinda ran out of the past. Yeah that chinese lady is pregnate, now lets see a past vision of her mom (commercial) telling her advice of when she is pregnate. (commercial) Then she can use that advice (commercial) to save herself of blah blah blah… Those kind of visions suck. Commercials suck, but nobody can help that. Now it looks like the visions are of the future. Thats cool. Something new, but the writers need to do something to save this show. I love it, thats why I want it saved. So heres some advice of a viewer.
1- Have a website to ask viewers what they want and don’t want.
2-Solve some of the mystery, in say 3 episodes (3 weeks) Thats long enough. Keep one BIG mystery for the end.
3-Kill the reruns. Lost people get paid enough to not have vacations. Film during the summer, kill the reruns.
4-Don’t drag the season. Balance the mystery/answer ratio.
5-No new characters. Maybe one, but not six. Kill off boring characters, or at least give them less run time than the more important characters.
Now please, please, take some of this information and try to go with something of this nature. People watch what they like, not what they don’t. Give us something to like again. Once again, I love this show. I’ll watch it until it ends, no matter what.
45. Dianne Shepard | September 30th, 2007 at 8:19 pm
i want to know when the new season begins,i’m waiting for it and there hasn’t been anything on the television about when the new season starts.Thank you,and please let me know when it’s going to start.
46. Phil | February 8th, 2008 at 5:47 am
ya know when daybreak went down to 2 million people they took that great show off the air, no way in hell their going to be taking Lost off the air when there is over 12 million still watching it. I was one of the people who saw first season in about three days total, then started second season and loved that one as well. I feel Lost started to go down hill on third season, it wasn’t that great. I am still watching Lost, to see what they thought up and it’s not looking all that great. For the fans that still like the show, I hope they figure out a way to keep those fans interested.
p.s. if this wasn’t understand able i’m sorry, im learning how to write correctly again.
