College stats give shows ratings boosts
Cory Bergman February 19th, 2007
Nielsen has just started measuring viewing in college dorms, and many shows are getting a big boost. Fox’s House jumped 89 percent in the 18-24 demographic. ABC’s Ugly Betty is up 86 percent and Grey’s Anatomy 67 percent. NBC’s The Office jumped 57 percent in the demo. “Perhaps what’s most interesting about the data is just how much TV, particularly broadcast TV, college students do watch,” writes Kevin Downey in MediaLife Magazine. Now all we need is video game ratings.

“89%”, “86%”…
those formulas need a huge tweakin’.
i’ve walked past quite a number of dorm rooms with the door left open lately. the computer (be it laptop or desktop) holds the best spot in the house.
the tv, if there is one, has a wii, ps3 or some other game console hook to it.

Well, keep in mind the 18-24 audience is small to begin with. These increases apply just to that demographic.

fair enough.
i’m not saying these students (man, it is sooo tough to stop referring to them as “kids”) don’t watch any tv. i’m saying the methodology might need some work.
does the fact that the door is open when someone walks by happen to make them a viewer?
that audience might be small, but their purchasing power in and around campus is huge!

They started monitoring viewrship in Dorms. Wow that only took them 25 years.
I bet next they’ll want a pat on the back for getting ratings from Bars.
