The user video site Revver has inked a deal with Verizon’s rapidly-expanding IPTV service, FiOS TV. “We’re joining with Revver to bring the user-generated video phenomenon to the TV set,” said Marilyn O’Connell, Verizon SVP of video solutions. “This is just another way that FiOS continues to distinguish itself from old-fashioned TV.” Revver will also supply clips to Verizon’s broadband entertainment portal. Press release…

PRESS RELEASE — NEW YORK, Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ — Verizon FiOS TV and consumer broadband customers will soon have easy access to premium user-generated video content from Revver (http://www.revver.com/), the first marketplace for viral videos. Revver content will launch on Verizon’s Surround broadband entertainment portal by the end of the first quarter and on FiOS TV later this year, and it will be free to Verizon FiOS TV and broadband subscribers.

Verizon customers will now be able to stream premium Revver videos whether they’re in their living rooms, on their computers or on the go. Through a separate agreement, Verizon Wireless already makes Revver videos available to Verizon Wireless customers with V CAST-enabled handsets.

“We’re joining with Revver to bring the user-generated video phenomenon to the TV set,” said Marilyn O’Connell, Verizon senior vice president of video solutions. “Backed by Verizon’s technology, we’ll make it easy for our FiOS TV and broadband customers to enjoy the best of the cutting-edge videos that Revver is known for. This is just another way that FiOS continues to distinguish itself from old-fashioned TV.”

Said Steven Starr, founder and chief executive officer of Revver: “Revver prides itself on attracting the very best digital video creators who are producing entertainment for the Internet today. This initiative will help us further support our creators by bringing their content to a whole new TV audience. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our company and the growing Revver community.”

Verizon is providing FiOS services on the nation’s most advanced digital all-fiber optic network. Verizon will deliver selected Revver videos and other Internet video content to the TV sets of FiOS TV customers as part of its next-generation FiOS TV service. At the heart of the system, which was unveiled during the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show, is a new interactive media guide that will make watching FiOS TV easier and better than ever. With the new guide, available later this year, customers will be able to control and manage a vast array of digital content including television programming, movies, Internet video, games, music and photos.

Verizon FiOS TV and broadband subscribers, including both FiOS Internet and Verizon High Speed Internet customers, will have access to some of the best content from a variety of Revver’s video creators. The content will be chosen from categories on Revver.com such as Editor’s Picks, Viral Video Classics, Extreme Sports, Laughs, Animation and Cute Overdose. Revver will provide the best user-generated video clips daily to Verizon.

In addition, when users access other videos of interest on Verizon’s Surround broadband entertainment portal, they will be presented with related content from Revver. For example, when a customer browses through movie downloads, the service will display Revver videos that relate to those movies. Similarly, someone watching sports, accessing games or listening to music will see Revver videos related to that content.

Revver, the first online video service to compensate users for sharing content online by splitting net revenue 50/50, does not accept copyright- infringing content. In keeping with its overall mission, Revver now will share revenue with users who have agreed to allow their content to be featured via Verizon FiOS TV and broadband services.

The Verizon FiOS service is coming to my house any day now. WooHoo! The inclusion of Revver content sounds like the folks at Verizon actually get the future of TV.

The Maryland county where I live is one of the first to approve the FiOS TV franchise and everyone I know who has it loves it. In January, crews came to the neighborhood to lay the fiber and install below-ground junction boxes at the curb. It seems to take a few weeks before they are ready to actually install the service to the houses but I plan to be first on my block to schedule an appointment.

With the virtually unlimited bandwidth of the fiber, I hope to see more such video services and HDTV channels from FiOS TV.

Oh yay. All that 320 x 240 pixelated goodness right on your 50 inch DLP TV…

Does anyone else think that this is a seriously dumb idea?

I agree. But starting with video that’s half the resolution of every television on the market is not going to win people over.

I wish AT&T would do likewise.
