‘The Lost Tomb of Jesus’ to air on Discovery

Cory Bergman February 25th, 2007

Get ready for some serious controversy. On Monday, the Discovery Channel held a press conference to promote the upcoming documentary produced by James Cameron, “The Lost Tomb of Jesus,” and what it calls perhaps the greatest archaeological find in history: “the tomb that once may have held the remains of Jesus of Nazareth and his family.” And that’s not all, the documentary will suggest that Jesus may have had a son named Judah. “It doesn’t get bigger than this,” says Cameron. “We’ve done our homework; we’ve made the case; and now it’s time for the debate to begin.”

The tomb, as shown in a new section on Discovery.com with an interactive tour, photos, blogs and a soon-to-be-heated discussion board. Press release below…

PRESS RELEASE — Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ — Scientific analysis of
limestone ossuaries (bone boxes) and physical evidence found in a
2,000-year- old tomb in Talpiot, Jerusalem, provide credible new
information that the tomb once may have held the remains of Jesus of
Nazareth and his family. A new Discovery Channel documentary THE LOST TOMB
OF JESUS, from executive producer James Cameron and director Simcha
Jacobovici, exclusively reveals what might be the greatest archaeological
find in history. The film presents the latest evidence from world-renowned
experts in Aramaic script, ancient DNA analysis, forensics, archaeology and
statistics. Among the major discoveries chronicled in the program is new
evidence that Jesus and Mary Magdalene, also known as “Mariamene e Mara,”
may have had a son named Judah.

A press conference will be held by Discovery Channel on Monday,
February 26, at 11:00 am in New York City. At that time, what are thought
to be the ossuaries of Jesus of Nazareth and Mary Magdalene will be
unveiled. (To register for the press conference and receive location
information, please call 212- 751-3342.)

In attendance will be Jane Root, president and general manager of
Discovery Channel; James Cameron and; Professor James Tabor, chair of the
Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at
Charlotte; Dr. Shimon Gibson, archaeologist with the Albright Institute;
Professor Andrey Feuerverger, professor of statistics and mathematics at
the University of Toronto; and Dr. Charles Pellegrino, co-author of The
Jesus Family Tomb.

THE LOST TOMB OF JESUS, which premieres on Sunday, March 4, at 9 PM
ET/PT on Discovery Channel, follows an investigative journey into the
identities of and relationships among 10 ossuaries, which originally were
discovered more than 25 years ago but never were connected conclusively. In
conjunction with the film, HarperSanFrancisco is publishing a companion
book, The Jesus Family Tomb, co-authored by Jacobovici and Dr. Charles
Pellegrino, with a foreword by Cameron.

The Talpiot tomb originally held 10 ossuaries, nine of which are still
within the Israel Antiquity Authority’s domain. Six of the limestone bone
boxes that served as First Century Jerusalem-area coffins include
inscriptions of names found in the New Testament - “Jesus son of Joseph,”
“Maria,” “Mariamene e Mara,” “Matthew,” “Yose” and “Judah son of Jesus.”

“This has been a three-year journey that seems more incredible than
fiction,” says Jacobovici. “The idea of possibly finding the tomb of Jesus
and several members of his family, with compelling scientific evidence, is
beyond anything I could have imagined.”

“It doesn’t get bigger than this,” says Cameron. “We’ve done our
homework; we’ve made the case; and now it’s time for the debate to begin.”

“Discovery Channel brings our worldwide audience the latest information
about life’s enduring mysteries through the network’s extensive funding of
scientific research and analysis,” says Root. “It is an honor to be part of
what might be the most important discovery in history. This program
provides viewers with the latest forensic evidence, information about the
Talpiot tomb, and important historical context. We invite viewers to review
the facts, engage in discussion, and come to their own conclusions.”

Could this have been a holy tomb for Jesus and his family? Evidence
shows the following:

- Leading epigraphers agree about the text inscriptions;
- Expert archaeologists confirm the nature of the finds and their
historical relevance;
- The tomb contains a mysterious symbol over the entrance found on other
Christian artifacts; and
- A statistical study concludes that the odds - on the most conservative
basis - are 600 to 1 in favor of this being the Jesus family tomb.

Dr. Carney Matheson from the Paleo-DNA Laboratory at Lakehead
University in Ontario, Canada, conducted a mitochondrial DNA analysis on
microscopic bits of matter recovered from the “Jesus son of Joseph” and
“Mariamene e Mara” ossuaries. The test genetically concludes that the two
were not maternally related. Given that this was a family burial place
reserved for spouses and blood relations, it is possible to deduce that
they were a couple.

As shown in the film, Jacobovici and his team use robotic cameras to
locate the tomb, which was believed to have been destroyed but is actually
in the center of a modern-day apartment complex. After briefly entering the
tomb, the filmmakers follow local regulations and seal the tomb with the
hopes that they will return to conduct further analysis.

A special Web site, http://www.discovery.com/tomb, will provide in-depth
information to allow viewers to make their own decisions about these
extraordinary findings. A virtual evidence kit, with the latest scientific
analysis, can be examined first hand. The original map of the tomb drawn by
Dr. Shimon Gibson in 1980, exclusive Web interviews, and detailed images of
the inscriptions will be online for the world to explore. The site will
feature a forum for debate and conversation with several experts sharing
their thoughts and answering questions in message boards and blogs.

THE LOST TOMB OF JESUS is produced for Discovery Channel worldwide by
Associated Producers, in cooperation with VisionTV Canada and Channel 4,
UK. James Cameron and Simcha Jacobovici are executive producers for
Associated Producers. Phil Fairclough is executive producer for Discovery
Channel.

THE LOST TOMB OF JESUS airs in the U.S. on the following networks:

Wow, I’m certainly excited. James Cameron + Religion + Discovery = Goooood watchin’.

DNA tests?! Dang… So who got the hair sample from God to do the paternity test? :-)

Seriously though, this should be an interesting documentary but I’m a little skeptical of the “most important discovery” claims. I’ll let the doc speak for itself but I just don’t see James Cameron (of T3: Rise of the Machines fame) ending Christianity as we know it with a Discovery Channel program.

Here’s what’ll happen. Christians will freak out. Jon Stewart will joke about it. We’ll get tired of talking about it. Anna Nicole will finally get burried. Then we’ll move on to K-Fed’s new girlfriend.

Why is it…. that the Divinity and life of Jesus Christ is being questioned about its authenticity so much in the media??? I never hear anyone trying to PROVE Allah, or Budda, etc…..are not authentic as their followers believe……Why is that??? I’m guessing it would not be “politically correct”. But why offend followers of Christ? Why do unbelievers of Christ CARE so much about PROVING He is NOT who He says He is? Why???? Seriously, it’s quite amusing to me and no one has ever been able to explain it. Possibly…. 2000 years later, the power of His name STILL affects his creation one way or the other! Just a little food for thought….(smile)

This is definitely going to send sparks flying. We here in the 21st century have been so removed from the original messages that were taught 2000 years ago that this too will be misinterpreted. If this IS the burial place of the body of Jesus of Nazareth, the one thing it does prove is that once again the “Church” has mislead us. After studying the Gnostic scriptures from the Nag Hammadi texts for the past year that were deemed “heretical” by the organized church of Constantine, (I know it has been studied longer by more scholarly figures than myself, but what the hell!) I find that the teachings and parables focused on the spirit of the “Christ Consciousness” not the body of the man, i.e. “the man that clothes me”. It seems to me that we would not even be having this discussion if these texts had not been hidden from us. Thank you, Catholic Church!:) If it is easy enough for a novice like myself to understand this, perhaps there would have been more of you out there who would not be having a “spiritual crisis”. If you do have true faith though, this will not shake it, and if you are an Athiest… what do you care anyway!

In regard to the question posed above: Why is the divinity and life of Jesus always being questioned? One day, we will all realize that we are ALL “divine”, and always have been. The reason people get down on Christianity is because it has taken the truth and warped it to keep people living in FEAR and ignorance. It has controlled the lives of people for centuries, and is responsible for many of the darkest hours of mankind (i.e. the Inquisition, the wars in Ireland, the war in Israel/Palestine, etc.) No one seems to remember the MESSAGE Jesus taught … basicially, be a good human, don’t hurt ANYONE, and know that god lives inside you. Even Jesus knew we were all divine, and the Church and Kings EDITED the Bible throughout the years to take out the parts they didn’t like. This is PROVEN HISTORY, but most Christians refuse to acknowledge it. As an archaeologist myself, I think it’s wonderful when the TRUTH gets dug up, to finally prove to people that they are fighting for nothing … Every religion has merit, as long as it serves to show humans their own divinity. So Christianity just needs to step up, admit the LIES they’ve kept going for all these years, and someday, maybe we’ll get to see all the REALLY secret stuff that they have hidden away in the Vatican Archives (and not just the stuff that’s available online!) ASK FOR THE TRUTH, AND KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN. LOOK INSIDE YOURSELF FOR DIVINITY, FOR IT IS THERE, I ASSURE YOU.

JEASUS SPEAKS FOR HIMSELF. LET GOD BE TRUE AND EVERY MAN A LIAR. READ HIS WORDS BELOW.

    Passage Mark 13 :

    Mark 13
1And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!

2And Jesus answering said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings? there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

3And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately,

4Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?

5And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you:

6For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

7And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet.

8For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.

9But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.

10And the gospel must first be published among all nations.

11But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.

12Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death.

13And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

14But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:

15And let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take any thing out of his house:

16And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment.

17But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

18And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter.

19For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.

20And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect’s sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.

21And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not:

22For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.

23But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.

24But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,

25And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.

26And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

27And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.

28Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:

29So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors.

30Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.

31Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

32But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

33Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.

34For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.

35Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:

36Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.

37And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

Hooray for James Cameron for heading into a huge ’storm’ that I am sure awaits anyone who has the courage to upset the ‘established Christian stand’ on what is truth and what isn’t. Listen for the uproar from the Catholic Church and all christian fundamentalists everywhere!! If anyone reads the Gnostic Gosples and/or the real history of the Catholic ChurchCouncil of Nicea-325AD), and the edits, omits and forgeries therein, in the Bible, its not a huge leap to find this work completely plausible. I have always found it amazing that all Christians accept unquestioningly, that the Bible is the absolute ‘word’ of God! Well, I guess not, n ow that I think about it. Isn’t it true that the Bible was the ‘work’ of the Pope and Bishops that were ordered by Constantine to come up with a single book containging all the scriptures that were ‘accepted’ by those gathered? And, wasn’t it left to a VOTE as to whether Jesus should be considered Divine, or not? Thats just the tip of the iceburg. It gets worse. However, the good news is that its all out there for anyone to read!! Christians everywhere have been fed the ‘company line’ for 1700 years now. Its time for the truth of all this finally come to the fore.
Thank you James Camerson, thank you Barbara Thiering and thank you Elaine Pagles.

This will get a lot of plublicity to be sure. I saw a bumper sticker several weeks ago and laughed….”Easter is cancelled…they found the body.”

    It evidently was quite timely.

The NT was compiled by those who allied themselves with the church of Rome who allied themselves with the government.

There were other “Christian” groups spread throughout the empire. The group in Rome was the largest…and had the government behind them.

The only books considered “authentic” were those which agreed with the church of Rome….there were many other “scriptural writings” being circulated at that time among various regional churches….but once the “universal” church declared what was authentic and what was not…there was a wholesale “attack” on those other writings to have them destroyed….hence we have Nag Hammadi….writings which escaped being destroyed….I believe it was Anathasius who set the ball rolling to destroy any writings which disagreed with the church that established it’s headquarters in Rome and claimed “apostolic authority” to do so.

This documentary if it proves even a little bit….factual…will cause a stir…most liberal churches don’t believe in a physical resurrection anyway….so the superstitions of the true believers are the only thing in qusetion.

I’m really glad that this has finally come to light. People have been fooled and played like puppets for too many years. There is more to the bible than what is in the King James version. There is so much information that has been hidden from us that lies within the walls of the Vatican. But it cannot be hidden for long. God will not allow the truth to be hidden. Ask for it and it will be shown to you. It is up to you how you will deal with it. Understand that we are living in the times of the beast and the jezebel, and you better believe that the jezebel is the Catholic church. From what God has shown me, everything points to them. They are the ones that changed the sabbath day from Saturday to Sunday (Day of Sun worship; Satan- morning star-sun). It is the church that lies to their followers to make them believe that the bones of Peter lie within the Vatican, when in actuality, his remains are in an ossuary in a tomb in Jerusalem along with Lazarus and his sisters, marked just like these ossuaries were marked. Christianity is a religion not of Jesus, but of his adversary. We were told that many would come pretending to be him, and many would be deceived. Please wake up and ask God to show you the truth and he will.

A true Christian will not afraid to watch this because his teaching is what matter to them, not his resurrection or heaven or god power.
The Buddha never said he is GOD. He even said that anyone could be a Buddha. Yet, Buddhism did not die. People still worship Buddha.
So wake up my fellow human beings. Don’t we have to afraid of someone to keep our internal evil in check?

Don’t get me wrong, I believe in a divine Creator, whatever you want to call Him/Her…

However, organized religion was an invention of the people, a means for the leaders to control the population. Who has more power, the King who says “Do what I say or I will have you killed” or the Pope who says “Do what I say or burn for eternity after you die?”

The miracle is still there for Christians.
    The resurrection is still there
Stop thinking about the body as resurrection
    The body is temporary
    The resurrection is about spirit
    I would be more re-affirmed
If “they” could find the human remains of Jesus
I know that Jesus “ascended” or more relevant
The Spirit of Jesus moved on to reside in all of us
His humaness would only more re-affirm
That his message or “her” message
That the spirit of the Universal spirit is present in all of us.
The “body” is a temporary experience
I thank you for “Jesus” and his message
That what is unknown is way past any of us understand
    Carry on, James Cameron
    I think Jesus would smile.

Why wasn’t DNA testing done on the other Mary to see if there was a match between the “Jesus” and “Mary” (not Mary Magdeline)? If they matched, then you would know they were related. Also, were the Ossuaries written in Aramic or Greek? (Jesus name was Yeshua in his native language)

there are a lot of confused people on this site, specifically concerning the origins of the bible. Do your homework before you start quoting what Dan Brown in the Davinci Code tells us!!!!! (Great work of fiction by the way.) I always find it amazing what people who have not read their history will tell us about the origins of the New Testament, Constantine, the council of Nicea, and the so called vote for the divinity of Jesus. Suggested reading(for those who are tired of hearing all the so-called know-it-alls tell about what Constantine did at the Council of Nicea):«The Early Church Fathers volumes 1 to 9» compiled by Philip Schaff, «The Canon of Scripture» written by F.F.Bruce, «St.Paul, the traveller and Roman Citizen» written by Sir William Ramsay, «The New Testament documents:are they reliable» written by F.F. Bruce. There are many many more books written by men and women who have spent their lives studying archeology, history and the bible. Instead of believing controversial fiction novels, and comments made by people who have so obviously not done their research, do a little digging yourself, buy the books, and read about what really happened.

Yes, I am the undertaker. I finally convinced Jesus and Mary M that this line of tomb would be the most solemn and dignified, with the right environmental message. Mary, his mom, had her eye on the Etruscan series, but starting at 2,000 brass rods it was not the choice for the economy-minded homemaker. Joseph said there was no way he was coming out of retirement to make more chariot wheels so we struck a deal on the limestone and that’s all there was to it.

I feel secure in my love of GOD, my acceptance of Christ Jesus, His son, of whom He was well pleased and in the Virgin Mary, blessed among all women and because I’m at peace with this, I plan to watch The Discovery Channel air The Lost Tomb of Jesus on March 4th.

I really don’t care if Christ was married and had a child or not. He was and is the Son of God and that’’s what matters for I do believe Jesus will pass judgement on us. I thank God that Jesus lived and knew how hard it is to be human.
I hope everyone learns to love God and love our neighbors as ourselves, for God does love us all.

The curious situation about religions is that virtually all claim they offer the only path to salvation. If this were true,
one wonders why God / gods have been so selective as to
limit the reach of the favored faith to a region of origin (e.g.
Palestine or India) and then sanction its spread chiefly by missionary or military means. Why has the “true path” so narrow as to exclude the great majirity of humanity from participation? Of course, if we delve further we find that
most religions offer a “resurrection reward” — and if we
look back to milennia BCE we find such promises in
ancient Egypt and most weatern faiths. In fact, the
history of Egyptian god Horus is strangely parallel to
to that of Jesus — both born of virgins, both slain by their
enemies and both resurrected. These legends are found
among a whole variety of “God-Kings’…. they are based
on a natural system olf reward-and-punishment deified
to constitute an unassailable source of authority

The hot-gospellers and the Bible-thumpers were too slow in catching the Joke. By the time they realised that the corner-stone of their preaching — THE ASCENSION OF JESUS — had been undermined as a result of Christian Biblical erudition, the publishers of the RSV had already raked in a net profit of 15 000 000 dollars! (Fifteen Million). The propagandists made a big hue and cry, and with the backing of two denominational committees out of the fifty, forced the Publishers to re-incorporate the interpolations into the “INSPIRED” Word of God in every new publication of the RSV after 1952, the expunged portion was “RESTORED TO THE TEXT.”

It is an old, old game. The Jews and the Christians have been editing their “Book of God” from its very inception. The difference between them and the ancient forgerers is that the ancient forgers did not know the art of writing “prefaces” and “footnotes”, otherwise they too would have told us as clearly as our modern heroes have about their tampering, and their glib excuses for transmuting forged currency into glittering gold.

Thank you Dave H for highlighting the intellectual level of the the Da Vinci Code DVD renters like Leah F.

These guys have no idea how the Bible was finally cannonised and that the NT wasn’t finalised for some years later.

I believe that Constantine was selected by God in his assembling of the church leaders and by setting a financial amount suddenly made this book worthy and special.

This is hogwash! ALL Christians KNOW that this is total and utter decpetion, heresy, and the attempt to further discredit the Christian religion. As Christians KNOW…Jesus ascended into Heaven…therefore his bones cannot be in a crypt!
End of discussion. We should all refuse to even acknolegde this absurdity! If someone tried this kind of deception saying that they had found Mohammed’s bones, what would happen? The anti-Chrisitan bias goes way too far!

  • 44. Darryl Giles  |  February 27th, 2007 at 8:45 am

What a bunch of hogwash that just goes to show where our culture and America is. The tomb is empty! Viewers who truly investigate this will Discover that there is no real evidence to back any of this up.

  • 45. Joanne M. Bryant  |  February 27th, 2007 at 8:57 am

I’m looking forward to seeing this discovery. As it was already discovered and discussed, many a time this Jesus and Mary do not appear to be the Living Christ. These names were common during those times. VERY COMMON. It is also been waived more than once that this tomb is in fact not the Living Jesus Christ, the heir to the Heaven and Earth. Questions also arise to the location of burial, as Jesus was from a poor family, and to be buried in a “middle class” tomb in Jerusulem remains a question, along with many many other things.

The word of God is not a joke. To this day, it confirms everything that is happening today.

This is ends times, and you will see many say they: are “Jesus” the Living Christ, and many will place doubt. Christian - true devoted Christians that are given the gift from the Holy Spirit are giving a seasoned Secret Knowledge. The knowledge is simple to receive, just open the Bible and read it all first before you yourselves doubt Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

These people are reporters that created this film. When they pick up the bible and read it, they too will know that the Jesus and Mary they have found is not the true Living Jesus Christ Our Lord and Savior.

But, as I have mentioned, I will enjoy seeing the film. Knowledge is power, and that is why I know the truth, because, I have read, and daily read the Living Word.

    In His Service Always,

“I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the son of the living God, and I accept him as my saviour.” They are just bones and whether or not they are the bones of Jesus doesn’t matter. All that matters are the truths in the words he spoke during his time on earth. Why do people care if Jesus married? He was sent to earth as a man, to live the life of a man while he was among us. People are too caught up in trivialities instead of looking at the big picture; which is the reason he was here. God inspired man to write the books of the bible, but man chose to edit God’s word by picking and choosing which books should be seen by the masses. It wasn’t politically correct for people to read the Book of Thomas, or The Gospel of Mary. These books and others were deliberately hidden by the Catholic church hundreds of years ago. This fact has NOTHING to do with Dan Brown and what he wrote. That there are other books of the Bible that were deliberately left out is the ABSOLUTE TRUTH. Yes, I believe that Jesus was (is) the son of God, but I also know that the books of the bible that we DO have telling of his life on earth were written by men living many, many years after Jesus time on earth was over.
The religious education of the masses should be done by careful, thoughtful research of ALL the books of the bible, not by simply watching television.

practically everything we know about the council of Nicaea comes from the writings of a historian named Eusebius . The roman emperor did take part in the council, however he was in no way the deciding force. He had no more decisional power than any of the 318 bishops and church leaders. He gave a brief introductory speech welcoming the church leaders, and then sat down, taking part in the discussions, he was influential, but he decided for no one what the church would believe. The goal of the council of nicaea was to establish unity in the church, as there were certain teachers which were deviating from what the church had taught for centuries, among these were the teachings of the arians. For more than 200 years the church had taught essentially the same thing, and had always defended the Deity of Jesus. On this subject, the goal was not to declare Jesus God, but to establish that seeing as this is what the church had always taught, that it would be declared an official doctrine of the church(the goal of this declaration being to officially declare the arian teaching to be heretical). «The two other points on which the council of Nicaea decided, the Easter question and the Meletian schism, have been already spoken of in their place. The council issued twenty canons in reference to discipline. The creed and the canons were written in a book, and again signed by the bishops. The council issued a letter to the Egyptian and Libyan bishops as to the decision of the three main points.» Any one can read through the writings of the early church (these writings coming from as early as 97 AD) and see that the general consensus of the early church was that Jesus was God. A careful reading of the New Testament documents also shows that this was the belief of every one of the authors of the books of the New Testament. Another important observation is to note that the letters that were allowed to be included in the New Testament were already decided (for the majority as only a few of the letters were excluded from one of two lists because of a lack of distribution) and agreed on by the majority of the church (here I do not speak of just church leaders, but the church as a whole), by the year 100 AD. The earliest list of the new testament books that we know of was written up, in or around, the year 140 AD. By the year 115 AD the four gospels that we now have in our New Testament were already circulating as a group of letters and were already considered to be authoritative. The only books about which there was any doubt after the middle of the 2nd century were some of those which come at the end of our New Testament. The Canon of the New Testament, the list that was recognized at the councils, was not something compiled and made authoritative at the council, but was simply the official recognizing of a list which was already considered (by the church as a whole) to be authoritative, and which had been so considered for at least 100 years before the council took place. This recognition was not in any way the primary subject discussed at the council. Neither was the deity of Jesus. As I have already said practically everything we know about what happened at Nicaea comes from the historian Eusebius, and neither he nor anyone else gives a hint that such matters were discussed. Twenty rulings were issued at Nicaea, and the contents of all of them are still in existence; not one of them refers to issues regarding the canon. As I said in my previous comment, before taking a position, do the research yourself. I have always found it interesting that the great majority of people who do not want to belief that Jesus is God will believe anything they hear that seems to discredit the New Testament, and this without having accomplished any form of meaningful research.

Unless I am mistaken the bible never says that Jesus DIDNT marry or have a child does it? How and why does this threaten the Christians?Again, unless I am mistaken he died BEFORE the Catholic, Babtist, and Pentecostal churches were invented. He died BEFORE Billy Graham and Jimmy Swaggard got TV shows.

Why do the Christians sound so angry? As Shakespear said “Me thinks they protesteth too much” Or something like that. You get the idea. Does God need such vitrolic defenders? The whole three Gods of Christianity kind of goes against that Monotheistic thing, doesn’t it? But if they can believe in Intelligent design then the whole logic thing is wasted on them anyway. Just sit guietly in a wood and meditate and you can feel God (Goddess) all round you.
    Blessed BE!

  • 52. Ron  |  February 27th, 2007 at 12:36 pm

If this is proven true, it will turn Cristianity on its ear. It will prove that JC had a mortal father and mother, it will prove that Joseph was not his father. It will prove that he had children, and therefore he has decendants!

  • 53. Bobby  |  February 27th, 2007 at 1:38 pm

Awesome! decendents of Christ among us. Lets see ,if we base it on carisma, then ……of course Elvis!

  • 54. Earl  |  February 27th, 2007 at 2:04 pm

Yes indeed, Christians do sound angry…don’t they? They invent their mythical history of how we got the Bible….they invented the mythical story of Acts…how the church was born….they invented “Christ”…the man Jesus didn’t consider himself God…Christians in the following decades “invented” those ideas…the gospels aren’t eyewitness accounts….they are faith statements concerning what the newly forming Christian community had come to believe about him….the ones who didn’t agree with the most vocal were labeled “heretics”…and finally when one of the largest groups allied themselves with the Roman government….the other groups were supressed….Read Eilene Pagels “The Gnostic Gospels” or “Beyond Belief.” Read “Who Wrote the Bible” by Burton Mack or “The Myth Maker” by Hyam Mccoby.

The above poster who wrote “Buddah never claimed to be God….” is correct…but then neither did the historical Jesus…he was an observant Jew….those words would have never passed his lips.

I do not believe they’ve found his tomb….he was a peasant and had no ties to Jerusalem…he died a criminals death…he was probably ripped from the cross and buried in a common grave with all the other criminals…or eaten by dogs….Romans weren’t too compassionate to let family or friends take the bodies of criminals and bury them…the horror of not having a proper burial was part of the sentence…”cursed is the one hung on a tree.”….the man’s body will never be found….the “tomb” never existed except in the fertile minds of the first Christian gospel writers….anything else is fanciful myth….

  • 55. David K.  |  February 27th, 2007 at 3:12 pm

Does everyone realize that Jesus (and Joseph, etc.) were all very common names at the time. ‘Jesus son of Joseph’ was probably no more uncommon than ‘Robert son of George’ or ‘Richard son of Alan’ would be today. You only have to look at modern day ancestry tracing web sites to realize how many hundreds of people share the same name and even happen to have the same named parents.

  • 56. hk  |  February 27th, 2007 at 3:32 pm

Here is how I am personally going to approach the issues raised by this presentation.

I’m going to watch the show and, as I do so, I am going to apply my powers of critical reasoning to the evidence presented.
If it makes sense to me, then I will likely come to accept it as likely true and if not, then I will disregard it.

That’s right, I really do intend to examine the evidence in a realistic and critical fashion and I will try, as much as possible, to approach the issue with an open mind.

Frankly, I do not see the point of trying to convince anyone else as to the “correctness” of the conclusion that I ultimately come to and I really do believe that what YOU believe is none of my business…..

  • 57. Earl  |  February 27th, 2007 at 4:18 pm

    hk,

    Great post….

What I have found is we have Churchians calling “foul” that their sacred story should be questioned…it is not an “attack” on Christianity or the church or Christ to question historical and archiological findings….not exploring these findings because it’s an “attack” on Christianity is like saying the Nag Hammaddi Library or the Dead Sea Scrolls should not be examined because it’s an “attack” on the Bible.

  • 58. Pine  |  February 27th, 2007 at 4:20 pm

Being brought up in a very christian household and even being reborn at one stage, I decided to find the truth for myself (something I highly recomend to all)
Leaving my home country of South Africa over 15 years ago I made a point of befriending and interacting with all races, religeons and cultures around the world, My personal discoveries has been astonishing, The result of years of reading and opening myself up to other ideas was what I like to call enlightenment or the ability to make up my own mind about any subject regardless of the way that I was brought up or influenced by various people and institutes.
Many years I spent debating with my dad ( with no results) trying to convince him that if he has the courage to open his mind to other ideas he will discover the truth for himself.
No matter how many hours you waste trying to convince christian believers that what they know is just years of indoctrination and that you are the sole creater of your thoughts and reality and that there are no satan and hell or Jesus to blame for the predicament or paradise that you find yourself in, you will not change there minds.
The same way I was brought up and indoctrinated to be a racist in an apartheid South Africa until I had the courage to ask hard questions and finding the truth for myself, the same way christians are brought up or influenced through fear and guilt to believe that Jesus was resurected from the dead and that Satan has a way of bringing bad thoughts in our heads and that they should do certain things to gain the favor of a God and never bother to ask real questions to find the truth. Do not underestimate the power of your own mind.
Even if we find the body of Jesus with a sign on him saying I was a normal man and was not resurected, christians will keep on believing in someting outside of themselves and refuse to take responsibility for their own thoughts and actions.
My piont is, what is the use of all this debate, at the end it just won’t matter, we are all responsible to find the truth for ourselves or our journey on earth was a waste.

  • 59. atheist  |  February 27th, 2007 at 6:53 pm

Pine, the use of such debate is the opportunities of truth-seeking opened to millions of people brave enough like yourself, so that they can have a touch of all the data and make a decision for themselves.

  • 67. Joni  |  February 28th, 2007 at 11:30 am

Before anyone reacts to the future showing of Cameron’s documentary, READ all the info on the site. It is NOT the director’s intention to try to change anything that is written in the Bible. Besides, archaeological discoveries should NEVER be kept secret, BURIED still even though they have been unearthed.

Look, before you buy anything, a house, a car, a mattress, don’t you try to prepare to NOT be ripped off by studying what is known about the product? And then before you go out and make the purchase, don’t you shop for the place with the best price?

Why wouldn’t you want to be educated about EVERYTHING concerning Jesus of Galilee, Nazareth, Jerusalem, wherever he and his apostles were? Why wouldn’t you want to be educated about the many ways in which people worshipped back then? It is history, and we expect our children to learn the history of our own country. People have to chose for themselves!

  • 68. Jenry  |  February 28th, 2007 at 11:50 am

    its not the heaven that
    You promise to me
    why i love You
even the terror of hell or any devil action
    cant stop me
    i still adore You

    You attracted me
    when i saw You
    Crucified in cross
    and hated.
    You attracted me
with your body full of wounds
And when you take the death and teasing
    You attracted me
of Your true and pure love
So I LOVE YOU JESUS even if there is no heaven
even if there is no hell
    I still run to You
Please You dont have to do a thing for me to love You

Even if the hope is disappear like a buble
    Nothing will change
    I still love You

Unfortuneatly for most Christians all their faith really is is “fire insurance”…they tend to miss the fine points of “love your neighbor”…”feed the hungry”…”clothe the naked”….”give a cup of water to one thirsty.”

If all that Christian faith boils down to is “fire insurance”…I can live without it….I would not subject my self to such a god who asks me to suspend my intellect or thirst for other opinions just to sit close to him…I can do without a god like that….Christianity is loosing the battle….if the proof of Jesus’ ressurrection is in the lives of christians….then he is D-E-A-D and worm food.

The documentary is BULL. Honestly, rather than christianity, this documentary is an insult to archeology and scientific approach! The tomb was found in 1980. 27 years later these wackos are the only ones who seem to believe that this could be the lost tomb of jesus christ. Every other scholar has said the same damn thing. No, it isn’t.

This is nothing but a hyped up version of the weekly documentaries these channels put that only ends with maybe/perhaps/could be (Anyone recall “what’s in Jimmy Hoffa’s vault?). Seriously, would such a discovery be held up? If they had actually found concrete evidence that this is the tomb of jesus christ then this discovery would be in a press released 5 minutes after their findings! Not on a documentary by James Cameron being hyped beyond belief!

What they made here is a story disguised as an intellectual documentary. They even had freakin actors recreating the scenes. This is like the da vinci code only that it sucks. I never buy into these types of documentaries because what they are doing is telling a controversial story and looking at ONLY the evidence that keeps that story alive. In other words, they will experiment and make conclusions that benefit themselves and the story. Any other possible outlook is non existant. Of course, this is not real science.

Like I said, this is just another run of the mill documentary done because James Cameron hasn’t done anything good since Titanic and is broke. Of course, atheist should have a field day with this.

It is suppose that the Christians follow Jesus the Christ and His teaching, but instead they follow Paul’s teaching, and more than that they accept the words of the popes and bishops of Rome and even the words of the Emperors of Romes, and they believe in anything that came from any person who open new church (business), and some might go to the extreme by following the new pop up prophets (their followers are counted by the millions), what been preached by Jimmy Swaggart and Par robertson are accepted, without any question asked!!!. Everyone try to make his own story about Jesus and create new formulas about Him, all what you have to do is listen to what the christians and their site say, from the catholic side to the protestant side to the Jahovw witness site to the Mormon site etc., etc.,!!!.
Jesus always spoke the truth, and His words are from God, Here what He told you:
“NEGLECTING THE COMMANDMENT OF GOD, YOU HOLD TO THE TRADITION OF MEN. HE WAS ALSO SAYING TO THEM, “YOU ARE EXPERTS AT SETTING ASIDE THE COMMANDMENT OF GOD IN ORDER TO KEEP YOUR TRDITION.”
That is the truth, the “SHROUD OF TORIN” found to be a HOAX by many scientists using the most advanced methods of the 21st century, but even though it was kept until now protected in the cathedral of Torin, and thousands of christians pay homage to it and even the Pope John Paul II pay many visits to that HOAX SHRINE. NO ONE SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT!!!.
But when they discovered a REAL tomb and found real name, these names ” Jesus son of Joseph, Mary, Mariamene, Matthew, James, and Juda the son of Jesus”. The christians and their churches stood up to gard themselves and attack the others by any means of words but not the logic and that is before going to invistigate the truth for themselves. If that thing Happen before couple of centuries, I think the churches with their popes and bishops will not use words to deffend themselves but ROD, ROPES, and FIRE.

  • 77. Anonymous  |  March 4th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

    GALILEO: SPEAK THE TRUTH.
Mr. Jacobovici, and Dr. Charles Pellegrino, and everyone who helped you. I am Galileo, and I say that You are very lucky to be spared after all what you have done, first you open the tombs of Jesus and Mary, second you put their bones under the test, and all what the cherches and popes & the rest can do is deffend themselves by words, you are VERY LUCKY, lucky indeed.
There must be a great power from heaven looking after you!.
I think you all know my story. I did not touch Jesus or Mary, not even mention their name or the name of God, but all what i brought is my findings through scientific observation, and I told them that “THE EARTH AND THE MOON ORBITING THE SUN”, You know THE STORY and you know that is the truth, “do you?”.
That is all what i did claim, and the churches and the popes put me under HOUSE ARREST for the rest of my life, after “of course” they gave me a lesson not by words but by the RODS and HOT BARS etc. which make believe and accept that they are right and i am wrong!.
I tell you the truth that i was lucky because they did not put me on FIRE, like the ten of thousands who try say the TRUTH before me.
They told me that the holy books are the words of God, and what i am saying is coming from the devil and sattan or whatsoever, so please tell me if what you are doing and what the people of NASA and all the people who do scientifc research around the world are still under the influance of the devil or whatsoever?.
Please tell me if the laws of God, and the holy books changed at your time and been adjusted, or still telling the same story that the earth is flat and the sun and the moon still going around the earth, and both they were created along with all the stars (in the fourth day) while the creation of the light and animals and grass which all happen in the second and third day!!!?.
My friends, do not worry because what is happening is the will of God. Do you think that the many discovries which come one after another in the last few years is just came by a chance, many discoveries in a short period of time came to tell the truth, Nag-Hamadi findings, the Gospel of Judas and many others and now the tomb, all those did not come by accident, the truth will covered and hidden but it will never die, that is a fact.
The churches covering and hiding all the truth, they will never chage not then and of course not now, from where i am now up there, i can see more than you can, and what i see is real, people brain washed, and then filled to the rim with the old myths, until no room left for the logic and the common sence, then they are chained to be slaves to the few on top whom they are using them as robots to protect their kingdom and their wealth and their power on earth, the truth won’t matter. they made/ fabricated the laws as everything else.
Jesus told them ,” no one is good except GOD ALONE”, and told about God, “THAT THEY MAY KNOW YOU(GOD), THE ONLY TRUE GOD, and Jesus Christ who YOU (GOD) HAVE SENT.”
But they did not believe Him, of course my friends you should know the story, about the bishops who spent years arguing until they create their famous formula (the trinity) to suit the Roman’s Emperor and the Romans who had many gods before, and now they support their claims by the words of Paul and the words of the old books which i mentioned before!!!. NOTHING CHANGE they will argue with you no matter what until the end of the world. But no worry my friends the truth always prevail.
Good luck to you all, and God bless you and your scientific work.
    GALILEO.

PT Barnum couldnt have done a better job on this film

  • 81. novoneiro  |  March 4th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

The findings do not conflict with the Biblical account. The gospel sais he was resurrected and went on to live his life. Logic tells us that as a “son of man” he would have eventually went on to die a mortal death.
Oh yeah, and it should be no suprise that Jesus was a heterosexual who went on to marry Mary Magdelene. What’s the problem? Its common sense. Right.

  • 82. mike  |  March 4th, 2007 at 10:51 pm

This documentary is not going to make someone believe in god or not. But, Ted Koppel panel of naysayer was so obvious. It just goes to show you how much power the media has. How does a half beat so-called journalist like Ted Koppel get the power to attack, attack, attack. How does the same network that aired the show then allow this idiot try to debunk the documentary by calling up all the experts that gave initial interviews? Ted Koppel tried to undermine the entire show with his own experts. Of course this panel was a bunch of left wing deviants. The left-wingers hate the right more than the terrorists. I can’t wait until radical Islam takes over since these left-wingers will be first to go. Just one person’s opinion.

I heard once hat in the last days the earth would give up her secrets.
    test the spiret.
I have read ment of the comments on this topic, and we are all right. If anything, it has the public thinking. Most important, it has the public thinking about Jesus.

  • 84. hk  |  March 5th, 2007 at 8:02 am

I must say that I am very disappointed by most of the foregoing “comments”.

The sad fact is that many of the above comments reflect an attitude and approach that can properly be characterized as “nonsensical”.

What I would like to see are reasonable critiques that flow from a rational assessment of the assertions made and the evidence cited in this film.

    Well?

  • 85. Carl  |  March 5th, 2007 at 3:41 pm

Quote: “What a bunch of hogwash that just goes to show where our culture and America is. The tomb is empty! Viewers who truly investigate this will Discover that there is no real evidence to back any of this up.”

Like there’s evidence to support the Christian view LOL

  • 86. Earl  |  March 5th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

It was a good show…some of the evidence was compelling….Christians really get their “tits in a rigner” over this stuff!!! HA HA HA!

Let’s see….dead guys walk out of tombs…live guys walk on water….snakes talk to women and offers her apples….donkey talks to man beating him…axe heads swim like guppies.

Tell ya what oh Christians….you can prove the Bible is true for me in one easy step….doesn’t the Bible say that those who believe can drink any deadly thing and it won’t hurt them….prove you really believe in the “church of the talking snake” and I’ll convert…drink some Draino! That’ll do it for me….come on…who’s first? Hmmm…no takers…oh well if Yeshua walked out of the tomb you should be willing to bet your life on it…you believe in something that can’t be proven…I’m asking you to show something that can be proven…pick up that cup of Draino and bottom’s up!!!

    NO??? Didn’t think so.

  • 87. Ro  |  March 5th, 2007 at 7:56 pm

I missed the program! what the heck is going on?
Any how, Jesus is just alright with me, bones or no bones about it!
    Praise God woo hoo!

  • 88. ELI  |  March 6th, 2007 at 5:38 am

If Jesus’ mortal remains have been found, this would contradict the idea of a physical ascension but not the idea of a spiritual ascension. The latter is consistent with Christian theology.
JESUS IS GOD!!!, That is what the Christians believe.
The question here is more than His ascension, physically or spirityally, BUT, the main and only question should be “IS JESUS IS GOD”,
If this discovery prove that Jesus is married, and Mary Magdalene (Mariamene) is His wife, and Juda is His son, then, the whole formula of the Trinity will be effected since it depend on three factors “THE FATHER- THE SON- AND THE HOLY GOST”, and here we find ourselves into complicated new formula. Jesus the son of God, and Juda the son of Jesus and the son of God too, since Jesus is God, and here we arrive at a bigger question, WHAT WE CALL THE SON OF JESUS JUDA?, THE SON OF GOD TOO OR WE SHOULD INVENT A NEW NAME?.
The God spouce is Mary the virgin, and Jesus born to a virgin mother (Mary), but Juda His son, which will be called the son of God or something else, His father is God, is born to the woman with unclean past and was possessed with devils (7 of them), beside other things, is going to become another God in the future, or what will be his position in heaven, and where he will be standing or sitting on the right hand of the father of His father or on the left?.
I would like to hear you opinions, thanks.

WoW Eli get some sleep man. You’re rambling. There does seem to be more confusion to the whole monotheistic thing but then so was the God the Father God the Son and God the Holy Ghost. I went to Catholic school. I can count to three. Today I just follow the Old Time religion. I feel closer to God(ess) out in nature than in any church. “An it harm none, do what thou will.”
If that isn’t the “Golden Rule” then I can’t read Old English or Middle English, whatever. It is the basic tenent of the Wiccan faith. Just what you need to cure angry Christians! Blessed Be!

  • 90. Herne  |  March 6th, 2007 at 3:46 pm

Yep, this whole idea of a virgin giving birth to a boy…HELLO PEOPLE!!!! Virgins don’t give birth to children. A large contingent of demi-gods throughout the ancient world made such claims…even stories of Ceasar and Alexander had such claims….seems to me Yeshua’s fanciful followers just cashed in on the idea.

It’s amazing to me that “love your neighbor…do good to those who despitefully use you…turn the other cheek…” is changed by most Xians to “curse those who disagree with you…exile their sick twisted souls to a burning hell!”…with maniacal laughing as the good Xians look across the abyss and go “neiner-neiner”…

Yeshua died….he was buried….the rumor was his followers stole the body….the “Lost Tomb” tends to support the idea…the gospels weren’t written for 40 years after the fact…the story of the Xian church, which is outlined in Acts…much later than that….look at the superstitious nature of people….demons…devils…ghosts….fetches….angels….faeries and lepraucans…no wonder Xianity is loosing out to the secular world….Snow White and Cinderella have more credence than they do….YAWN!!!!….One of these days…we’ll all go…”Jesus who?”

I think this is just a spin off from The Davinci Code. Here are a couple of guys who perhaps raised enough dollars to pay off their “professional testimonials”and supporters and who see the potencial, financial success of taking advantage of the ignorant and the vulnerable population. You know what guys it’s been done before! Next time look for something origial!

Just to set the record straight… I’m dead and that’s my tomb and now I’m about to disappear in a puff of logic.

  • 93. Jim Davis  |  March 7th, 2007 at 5:26 pm

What amazes me about this discussion thread is how fast people have veered into spouting opinions about Christianity — either frantically defending or rabidly attacking. Everyone seems to have forgotten the main topic: whether the Lost Tomb TV special was valid.

    It was anything but valid.

The basic premise hinges on the assumption that the tomb held one family; therefore, all the deceased must be related either by blood or marriage. But that was never proved. In point of fact, many tombs in New Testament times had two or more families.

Once you understand that, you can see that the DNA testing was meaningless. So the “Jesus” and “Mariamene” remains showed no blood kinship. So what.

This in addition to the fact that the “Lost Tomb” folks either didn’t test any of the other ossuaries for DNA, or didn’t get positive results. And four of the ossuaries had no names. Is it just possible that “Jesus” and “Mariamene” were related to some of them?

The statistical “proof” in the show is made bogus as well. The statistician was arguing that the odds are 1 in 600 that people in one family would have the names of the Jesus family by sheer coincidence. But as you know by now, it wasn’t necessarily one family.

Furthermore, no one named Matthew or Judah was named as a relative of Jesus in the New Testament. And although the “Lost Tomb” special says “Mariamene e Mara” means “Mary the Master,” Amos Kroner — the former chief of archaeology for the Jerusalem area — translated it to “Mary, also known as Martha.”

Finally, the “Lost Tomb” special links the so-called James ossuary to the “Jesus family tomb.” This is the box, unveiled in 2002, that was marked “James, brother of Jesus.” The inscription has been judged by the Israel Antiquities Authority to be faked, and the antique dealer, Oded Golan, is on trial on forgery charges. Incredibly, the “Lost Tomb” special not only doesn’t mention that, but uses Golan as a talking-head authority.

Bottom line: the “Lost Tomb of Jesus” is like cotton candy. It’s big, fluffy, colorful, but it withers when you try to bite down on it. Any Christians who feel threatened by it — and any haters of the faith who think it’s ammunition — just aren’t paying attention.

    Hey
Many people have questions about different religions.I think i have got some answers.
There is ONE GOD the creator.Ok how can we know or find him?
There were different people living in the past who explaind who the true God is but they said different things about God or they just wanted him to be as they wanted him to be so they would change the way they them selves wanted to change.”Like if i wanted to be(or stay) a killer i would want to have a God who is a killer or likes me to kill others”
So thats the problem…we dont realy want to change thats why we want God as we imagine him.But there is a SON OF GOD who is the truth of God,hand of God,the LOGOS…………..Only he tells us the truth about God and what God wants from us.
You need to read what he is talking about ! He is the truth and he tells the truth,we can only know God trough him. Were we born and knew things we never learned? We are growing with the word of God ,learning ,understanding, changeing…Is the truth hiding from us or are we hiding from the truth?I think we are.We feel good when we hear lies dont we?That makes us like”stay as you are”ignorant.
Change your hearts and minds you werent born pure !
Only trough Jesus Christ we can be made pure and be forgiven.Repent to God in the name of our LORD JESUS CHRIST .Not in the name of some idol(pope, mary, all american solar system…)Only one way there is and he is the way.
If you are interested in Christianity please take a look at the Bible and the chatolics church TO SEE THE DIFFERENCES !They lied to you about the Bible!
And for the illuminati brainwashing controlled tv channels this…
JESUS SAID—BEFORE MOSES WAS I AM

Have a nice God blessed day.

You cannot even shake the faith of the faithfuls by these utter non senses. Jesus is the son of God, and whoever believes in him will attain salvation that is the truth.
