Study: Linear TV on its way out for many
Cory Bergman March 4th, 2007
People in the 18-39 age group will consume 80 percent of their television/video via the internet, VOD, DVR, IPTV or other on-demand platforms in 7 years time, predicts a study by Solutions Research Group. “Networks have to think about a future where everything is nonlinear, more or less, and everything is picked out to watch on any and all platforms,” said Kaan Yigit, an analyst with the company.

While I agree it’s headed to a higher number, I think 80 percent is a bit high. Live sports alone will keep males age 18-39 well below that 80 percent number. Also, add to that channel changing, most 18-25 year olds don’t “plan” their video watching, they surf, and I think it’ll be closer to 60-70%.
Of course, it’s possible some new technology could flip all that on its head. Either way, it’s all about content. If you have something people want to watch, they’ll find a way to watch it, be it linear tv, internet or whatever. It’s just about how to monetize it for all those mediums.

that number does seem high, but “7 years time” also seems a bit high.

Are you ruling out “linear” viewing on wireless and other devices. There is a great deal of that happening beyond our borders. I suspect as bandwidth grows and wirelessness becomes as prevalent here as in all the “over theres,” the model we think is THE model will change.
