Geico ad campaign to become ABC sitcom pilot

Posted by Cory Bergman on March 5, 2007

Those Geico cavemen ads have impressed the ABC programming team so much they’re giving the cavemen a chance at their own sitcom. The pilot will feature the travails of three cavemen living in Atlanta as they battle discrimination, and at some point, a Geico spokesperson will make an appearance. Hmmm, an ad that turns into a TV show that’s partly an ad.

Adds Sam in comments: “Though this is almost guaranteed to be a schlocky one joke show that runs for five episodes, it’s not impossible to imagine that in the hands of good writers it could turn into Adult Swim style surreal awesomeness. Personally, I’d rather see the Gecko get his own show, but that’s just me.”

Adds Nadine: “I’ve been a huge caveman fan since day one. My dad just told me about this and I’m in shock. Although I adore the commercials, I can’t see how they can make it into a TV show. I’m a dork, though, so I’ll most definitely be watching the show. It can’t be much worse than what else is on TV, after all.”

The caveman has finally jumped the shark. And I’m a big fan of the caveman commercial campaign.

  • Safran

Sitcoms. So easy even a caveman can produce them.

No wonder the TV goliaths are continuing to take marketshare from other media such as the Intern… oh, wait… never mind.

Personally I’d like to slap that ugly,self-righteous caveman upside his swollen head. Sick of him and his ugly cavebuds.
    Enough already.

Looks like Tim woke up on the wrong side of the rock this morning.

sure, put “ginger” the hot cavewoman on there and all the guys will watch.

“Who are the ad wizards who came up with this one?!”

    No. No, no, no.

    NO.

    BAD TV execs. BAD!

One-joke works for commercials. This is because they’re short and, well, there’s usually only room for one good joke.

For a TV show to be good, you need some kind of depth. I’m not saying it’s impossible, because the American television-watching folk never cease to amaze me in terms of what does and does not become a hit.

I’m just saying…I haven’t watched a single thing on ABC in years, and this show goes a long way toward making me PROUD of that fact, rather than just having it be that nothing appeals to me over there.

    Next: “Head On: The Series.”

You have to admit – it would be easy enough to write.

If I was Geico, I’d be concerned that this would kill a very effective ad campaign.

  • Alyssa

Has anything like this ever been tried before.. even back in ye olden days of TV?

  • Robert

Yes, yes, yes and yes. Listen folks, this show can’t be any worse than the garbage on TV now. Give this a chance. Who know, with the right writing team this could be one hell of a show. Personally, I hope they pick it up for syndication.
