TMZ.com to launch DC spinoff site

Cory Bergman March 14th, 2007

The most popular entertainment site on the internet is gearing up to launch a spinoff site in DC. Called TMZDC, it would focus on lawmakers, administration officials and media personalities instead of Hollywood stars. I’ll admit, I’ve always been fascinated by TMZ.com (and the site’s supervising producer is a friend of mine) because it grew out of a canceled TV show and became a whirlwind success online. Part of its success is due to a sort of guerrilla approach to video — freelancers weilding mini-DV cams who join the paparazzi on the streets of Hollywood. These clips (mostly raw) are combined with a freshly-updated blog that frequently breaks entertainment stories written by TMZ’s relatively small staff. Now the question is, will people be drawn to see the same kind of coverage featuring politicians and media types rambling around DC? I’m betting yes.

This will be a huge hit, and a huge pain in the backside of politicians. I can’t wait.

And just in time for the election season. There are a ton of crazy stories involving Hillary, Obama, etc, that aren’t being reported because traditional media (rightfully) deems it insignificant or tabloidy. But people will eat it up on TMZDC.

Wait - you think there are stories the traditional media won’t report because they think the stories are too tabloidy? Like what? Affairs with interns? Someone’s ancestors had slaves? Someone’s ancestors were slaves? Who is in the closet and who is out?

Nothing is too tabloidy or insignificant for the media to report. If anything, TMZDC will report it first, then the others will pick it up. You mean to tell me that if TMZDC finds a bit of juice that Fox News or CNN won’t be all over it?

I’m glad there’s at least a few of you who are also excited for this. I was afraid I would be the only one geeky enough to anticipate a paparazzi style political site. Should be interesting to say the least.

TMZDC will be huge… politicians are never followed by paps. the only thing that comes out right now is dirt uncovered by opponents.
