‘Idol’ stakes are high if Sanjaya wins
Cory Bergman March 28th, 2007
It was bound to happen sooner or later. A mediocre singer on American Idol is getting more popular by the day, thanks to an audience that loves him (mostly tweens) and another audience (Howard Stern and VotefortheWorst.com) that just wants to see a “loser” win. Sanjaya Malakar “would ruin the show” if he wins, predicts one loyal viewer. Worst singers with great producers have gone on to make millions, but Idol does run the risk of losing a little credibility if he wins.
Adds Charles in comments: “Please… there’s a bad person that lasts forever EVERY year. Scott, Constantine, Kevin, Ace… This happens EVERY season. It’s annoying, but true. And whenever the talent pool starts to thin out, people vote more based on actual real talent than on crushes. If he makes the Top 4, I’ll be surprised.”
Adds Evan: “Before you start preaching about the end of civilization, remember that the votes aren’t made public. I seem to recall a few times in the past a cry has gone out for a recount after a popular singer has been voted out. The producers will eliminate him when the story has played itself out.”

TV is pretty. TV we can destroy is beautiful.

Heaven forbid we destroy the sanctity of American Idol.

Must be a slow news day since this story is on every site around, but before you start preaching about the end of civilization, remember that the votes aren’t made public. I seem to recall a few times in the past a cry has gone out for a recount after a popular singer has been voted out. The producers will eliminate him when the story has played itself out (maybe tonight)
The guys only in the top 10. Wait until he gets to the top 4 before looking for the other signs of Revelations.

Are you saying the vote count’s rigged? Are the Republicans in on this? Is Diebold? Halliburton? How high does this go?
I don’t see anyone preaching the end of civilization, exactly.
Idol’s a huge phenomenon - a huge multi-platform, convergence phenomenon. That’s why we cover it. Also, you know, the fifth grade demo.

I’m still angry naked guy Richard beat out crusty old frogman Rudy. Talk about rigged.
Oh wait, I’m sorry … which reality show are we talking about? I lost track.
Was it the one where people live in a house, eat maggots, live on deserted islands or get humiliated while trying to dance or sing?

Is this site being invaded by kids or something?
13. Rob | March 28th, 2007 at 8:57 pm
Yup, probably the same deal as them smart fifth graders Cory was talking about, Steve.
14. discreet_chaos | March 28th, 2007 at 10:19 pm
Does Apple sell Idol in their record store?
15. Charles | March 28th, 2007 at 11:08 pm
Oh! I made the comments edit. Fun fun!
Discreet_chaos… Last I heard, they don’t. Neither individual performances, not the show itself. AmericanIdol.com sells video performances from the show, and now full-length studio recordings from the contestants of the songs they sung on performance night. (So you get 3 minutes of song, instead of 1:20 sung on-air.)
But… that’s about as close you can get to (legally) catching up or reviewing what went down.

I really need to start ending my columns with more exclamation marks.

If American Idol producers were so concerned about a bad singer making it to the final, they would can the unlimited voting system. It’s a joke when Simon tells someone that it’s a “singing” competition when it’s really a popularity contest.
When they limit votes to 1 per phone number, then they will stop getting each 12 year old girl calling 500 hundred times for Sanjaya. Think about it, when Ryan says 30 million votes…I bet that it’s maybe 3 million people, voting an average of 10 times each. I don’t see John Doe calling over and over to get through just to place 1 vote for his favorite.

Since young Larry found your Sanjaya article so quickly, I’d say LR’s Google ranking must be climbing! Good jorb everyone!

They Idol producers aren’t the ones keeping Sanjaya around, but you can be damn sure they’re glad he’s still there.
He’s the only mildly entertaining/exciting thing on there, this season.
More people are talking about his “pony-hawk” hair this week than have gabbed around the watercooler about Melinda or LaKisha (obvious and rapidly-getting-more-boring front-runners) combined.
He’s generating buzz. I predict he’ll stick around a few more shows, but he’ll go in the end. If not, who cares?
People have been predicting doom for Idol season after season, and it hasn’t happened, yet. Sanjaya winning would not kill Idol…and as proof, I offer up Taylor Hicks.
Anyone remember that guy?
Kinda’ retarded, kicked a lot and made ugly faces while singing?
Yeah, no one does. And he WON.
Yet, people still watch. Whatever black mark may hang over the previous season obviously has no effect on the next. Chris Daughtry’s infamous departure, that whole “I guess Fantasia should win because she’s less terrible than these other 11 people” thing…go back as far as you want.
The roller coaster ride will end some day, but Sanjaya’s not the looming death everyone’s predicting. He’s just a goofy, entertaining little punk who’s in on the joke now and will continue to do what he does best — sing poorly, then defy the odds.
Still say he won’t win, though. It’s a bigger scandel, to me, when HE goes home, than when one of the “talented/favorite” singers goes home “too soon.”

I didn’t realize this freakshow had any “credibility” to lose.
21. Everett W. | March 29th, 2007 at 1:44 pm
The show doesn’t need credibility. It has ratings.
Ratings trump credibility.
22. mary | April 5th, 2007 at 5:14 pm
if sanjaya wins i will no longer watch idol
23. Katina | April 5th, 2007 at 5:20 pm

24. Katina | April 5th, 2007 at 5:27 pm

25. CinStar | April 6th, 2007 at 5:06 am
Sanjaya sucks and it is not fair that others, who don’t suck as bad as he does, had to go home before him. American Idol is over, should’ve been over a long time ago, right after Kelly Clarkson.

Melinda is good if i was listening to someone sing at church. She isn’t unique. Sanjaya has my vote.

Sanjaya has the IT FACTOR and fi he doesn’t go places in the entertainment world it will be because someboy with clout blackballs him. I am an 80-1/2 yr. old woman and I am swooning for this young man. He has everything going for him! His Besame Mucho was so beautiful I was all choked up and had goose bumps. I got that only one other time and that was when I saw Elvis perform on tv for the first time. I predicted his fame thenand I am predicting fame for Sanjaya now. Even the name Sanjaya is powerful. He CAN sing and all he needs is a little training. Someone step up to the plate and help this sweet young personality. Yes, YOU, you know who you are. Quit procrastinating and get with it before someone beats you to it! Sanjay, you’ve got it all, now get out there and exhaust every avenue that can bring you fame. Julie
