Sirius ‘Backseat TV’ coming to Chrysler vehicles

Cory Bergman March 29th, 2007

Sirius Satellite Radio — which has figured out how to transmit limited TV signals over the radio airwaves — has teamed up with Chrysler to provide Nickelodeon, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network to selected vehicles. For example, people who buy the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee could choose to pay $470 for the satellite video receiver, antennas and video monitors (two in the back and one in the front. The front monitor switches off when the vehicle is moving.) The service costs $19.95 a month, although the first year of service is included in the package. Sirius said more TV channels may be coming soon, but there are bandwidth limitations.

Did they stop making backseat DVD players? Somehow I don’t think you’ll calm down the kids with 16 minutes of commercials an hour, and something they can’t start and stop on command.

    -”ok kids, we’re here!”
    – “but the show isn’t over yet”
    - “get out of the damn car, or i’ll put my foot up your ass!”

Honestly… is this *really* necessary? Even the DVD players, are they necessary?

This makes me very, very ill.

hey, i recall makeshift battery powered tv’s in the back of cars/vans heading to florida for xmas break back in the early 70’s (presumably to keep the kids quiet).

antennae sticking out the winders in search of a local signal.

    how times have changed.

I will not be into this at all until I can keep the front screen playing while the care is moving.

If this takes off you’ll soon see websites with instructions on how to defeat the front screen turnoff function, just like those that teach you how to mod a Tivo or an Xbox.

How hard could it be? It’s probably just tied into the brake or transmission sensors.
