Fired journalists fire up their own news site

Have you been following the big mess at the Santa Barbara News-Press? In essense, the paper’s eccentric owner and co-publisher put journalism to shame, it became a labor issue, and she booted a big chunk of the newsroom. So now eight of the fired reporters have started up their own local news site, Santa Barbara Newsroom, to compete with the News-Press. Love it. (Thanks for the tip Darrien!)

Just bought the Canon HV20: HD for $1,000

I asked a couple months ago for ideas for a new HD video camera that wouldn’t break the bank, and we received plenty of great suggestions. After some research, Kate and I just bought the Canon HV20, which was just released, for $1089. It’s 1080i with a 10x optical lens (with the ability to add a wide-angle), and a 24p cinema mode for that film-style look. It has a saddle on the top for a boom mic, as well as a headset jack and a HDMI port (along with Firewire and USB 2.0). The camera store where we bought the HV20 said it’s their most popular seller by far (the owner even bought one.) We’re going to give it a spin tonight, so we’ll let you know how it goes. Pic…

Young viewers watch lots of TV away from home

A new Arbitron study found that 64 percent of viewers ages 12-17 and 49 percent of viewers 18-24 watch TV away from home at least once a week. For all viewers, the number is 35 percent. And an interesting but no-duh factoid: away-from-home viewers are less likely to skip over commercials.

Apple debuts Mac Pro 8-core

Whoa. If you’re into serious high-definition video editing and animation rendering, Apple just came out with a desktop machine today that boosts some serious power: 3.0GHz, 8-core Intel Xeon-based Mac Pro. The machine has slots for four (count ‘em) hard drives. “Consider the bar officially raised,” reads Apple.com.

Mmmm, look at all those slots.

MySpace announces online presidential primary

MySpace users will cast their votes on January 1 and 2, weeks in advance of the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries. According to Nielsen, MySpace users seek high engagement with candidates online and are 42 percent more likely to watch politically related online video, 35 percent more likely to research politics online, and 44 percent more likely to listen to political audio online.

Cory adds: Check out the MySpace home page today. Now that’s an ad…

As News Corp. leverages MySpace to generate more revenue, it will be interesting to see how they balance the ad experience with the user experience. Merrill Lynch predicts MySpace’s ad revenue will jump 201 percent this year to $271 million.

Google unwraps Web optimizer tools

In one of the biggest recent releases to an already enormous set of tools, Google is bowing the Google Website Optimizer. Focused on converting traffic and improving pages, the Website Optimizer is intended as the third leg of the proverbial stool with AdWords (driving traffic and revenue) and Google Analytics (measuring Web activity). Depending on the site and business plan, conversions could mean turning viewers into customers, turning users into viewers, and so on. The toolkit is free to registered AdWords users and can be downloaded at www.google.com/websiteoptimizer.
