Online ready, but Wii doesn’t play well with others
David Johnson April 5th, 2007
Wii is arguably the brightest bulb in the class of consoles, but it gets poor marks from Kemp Powers for staying in the sandbox and not playing nicely with others. With onboard Wifi, Wii is ready to rumble, but there is no present means for competitive online play against other users. Blogger buzz is that Nintendo is not allowing any third-party title producers to include online multiplayer features this year, even though more than 50 percent of the consoles are connected to the Net and 1.5 million classic games have downloaded. Meanwhile, the socially strategic Microsoft’s Xbox Live gaming service has attracted more than 6 million subscribers, creating a clearly differentiating feature for the 360.

That six million Xbox Live “subscribers” does not differentiate between paying and free accounts, and, more importantly, many Live users have multiple accounts. Figuring out the average number of accounts per human would cut that number down considerably.
As for the linked artice, although mentioning Pokemon Battle Revolution as being the first online multiplayer title (which will sell millions despite not being that great), it makes it sound like the Wii has nothing going on… when it has been able to send emails and pictures between Wii users since launch. Not to mention the WiFi-enabled News, Weather, Internet, and Everybody Votes Channel. Where’s the 360’s web browser?
Elebits, a Wii game that came out last November, lets you send user-created levels among other Wii users. It’s not “competitive online play” but it’s definitely a social gaming element that has been around for months without any of these “NINTENDO NOT ONLINE” articles commenting on it.
