NYT reviews ‘7 Minute Sopranos’

Remember that succinct, YouTubed “7 Minute Sopranos” we told you about? It recaps the show to date in about seven and a half minutes, billing itself as a “whacked out refresher.” The NY Times’s Virginia Heffernan has written a review, praising the video:

“Seven Minute Sopranos” is indeed a sizable feat. Virtually everything from the series seems to have been crammed in, from the giant plot tectonics — the twists that determine who lives and who dies — to the intricate subplots and even the comic relief… The more you study “Seven Minute Sopranos,” the more mischievous it seems. It’s an intensive work of the imagination.”

Heffernan writes that The Sopranos creator David Chase has seen the piece and approves. LR reader Ethan brought this article to our attention and wryly noted: “It’s a half page review. The season premiere of Entourage got less space…”

Google’s themes change with weather

I’m a couple weeks late with this, but I just noticed it. Google’s personalized home pages now allow you to select from a variety of themes which change with your city’s weather and time of day. This one doesn’t even have the Google logo in it…

Yes, this is my home page, and it’s sunny and beautiful in Seattle today.

MSNBC.com debuts new local pages with NBC stations

As part of its new initiative, MSNBC is relaunching local pages that feature headlines and video from each market. Of special interest: the headlines are from NBC and non-NBC affiliates, as well as local papers, blogs and other sources — although the NBC affiliate gets top billing and video exclusivity. It’s another experiment as MSNBC continues what Rex calls “a staged relaunch.” They have started with two locals: miami.msnbc.com and bayarea.msnbc.com for the San Francisco area. The Miami page brings together headlines from NBC6 (WTVJ, Miami), and WFOR, WSVN, Telemundo, the Miami Herald, the Sun-Sentinel and plenty of other sources. Essentially, the page is a Miami RSS reader. You have to admit — it’s a bold idea.

When you’re on the NAB press list, you get spammed

They’re coming like crazy now - about one an hour. “Invitations” from companies that are going to have booths at NAB are pouring into the LR inboxes. When you have press passes, you get this sort of stuff. Now, I like having information about news and products that may interest the LR Faithful. I’m not one of those “Under no circumstances should PR people come near me” types. But good Lord - couldn’t they at least know what we cover here? We’re not exactly the place to come for information about “B2B end-to-end turnkey solutions.” It’s a common newsroom complaint: know what we cover before asking us for coverage. We’ll play the game, but you have to know the rules.
