MSNBC.com debuts new local pages with NBC stations

Steve Safran April 6th, 2007

As part of its new initiative, MSNBC is relaunching local pages that feature headlines and video from each market. Of special interest: the headlines are from NBC and non-NBC affiliates, as well as local papers, blogs and other sources — although the NBC affiliate gets top billing and video exclusivity. It’s another experiment as MSNBC continues what Rex calls “a staged relaunch.” They have started with two locals: miami.msnbc.com and bayarea.msnbc.com for the San Francisco area. The Miami page brings together headlines from NBC6 (WTVJ, Miami), and WFOR, WSVN, Telemundo, the Miami Herald, the Sun-Sentinel and plenty of other sources. Essentially, the page is a Miami RSS reader. You have to admit — it’s a bold idea.

maybe here too local affiliates will refuse to join in because of the fear of the loss of creativity and consumer touch points (wink, wink)

    this is excellent!

What does this effort do to the old IBS relationships?

Those two sites are both NBC O&Os, which are actually IB sites.

    a few observations:

1.) google shows the msnbc/ibs “relationships” were signed in 1999/2000. who put the kabosh on it for this long? i wonder.

2.) the concept (or one similar) will rule locally by ruling nationally (and probably internationally too). the problem might arise that the underlying content providers do so as a NBC brand. how will miami harold feel about that? think generic.

3.) ib can go back to calling themselves ibs now since zelnorm, the women’s Irritable Bowel Syndrome drug, has been recalled due to side effects.
