impressive numbers.
just think how many more visitors they’ll have when they relaunch as their issn number.com instead of the meaningless NY, washington, LA, boston, philly, dallas, detroit, etc.

Wow the Seattle Times and the PI both have more uniques than Dallasnews.com Hard to believe…
3. jim wilson | April 8th, 2007 at 6:56 pm
funny… throw WRAL.com in the mix and they end up at #9 on that list….
how often does anyone ever hear that?
in fact, what is the point of this list?
the Miami Herald ends up looking like a COMPLETE joke on it.. the sun-sentinel SWAMPS them…
wouldn’t local market reach be the most important measurement? who gives a F about reaching people in Peoria — which is apparently what this list measures..
oh well

Your list should be entitled “The Most Popular US Newspaper Websites”.
Amazing though it may sound, there are newspaper websites outside of the USA: yes, those of us who live in the UK have stopped picking our teeth and drinking tea long enough to do some pretty impressive newspaper websites of our own.
Just as an example, Guardian Unlimited’s UK reach is 2.1 million (Neilsen//Netratings December 2006) - which puts it at number 12 in your list. But that’s only the UK reach: if you look at the Guardian’s reach by percentage of the population, then the equivalent for this would be 10.5 million: making it the second most popular newspaper on this list.
The BBC News website’s UK reach is an equivalent of 30.6 million for your list, by the way: over twice as popular (as a percentage of the population) as the NYT.
It’s good to know the rest of the world exists, isn’t it?

“who gives a F about reaching people in peoria?”
as geo-targeted ads take hold, YOU will.
6. jim wilson | April 9th, 2007 at 6:51 am
ah yes.. geo-targeted ads… sounds like the Point Cast of 2007….
or the Podcasts of 2003
hmmmm… still waiting on both those ideas to take off..
but, yes, geo-targeted ads will certainly blow the lid off my site — so, I MUST rush right out and figure out how to get everyone from Peoria to COME to my site.
right. I will get right on that.
forget local!!! geo-targeted ads — the next PointCast — will save me!!! wheeeeee!!!!

laugh all you care to.
i guess the “user experience” in raleigh is still a concept.
maybe i was talking about YOUR audience and where THEY visit on the net.
i could care less if everyone in raleigh visits wral every day. it’s where ELSE they visit that YOU are leaving serious $ on the table.
same goes for the poor souls in peoria.
why not just shutter your web channel now? save a buck.
8. jimwilson | April 9th, 2007 at 7:48 am
yes, invitedmedia, you are correct. forget the site is pulling in a 40 percent profit margin now.. we’ll close it down because we don’t “get” the geo-targeted ads idea…
but first, I’m not in Raleigh.. so let’s clear that up. I dont want to imply that any of this is about them. I pulled them out of the air as an example of where TV station sites would rank — and how they get no notice whatsoever by the media (which is probably a good thing — let them fly under the radar)
second, I guess that geo-targeted ads are so new that they need a real explanation.. perhaps I’m totally missing the point. do you have a link that explains this foreign, life-changing concept to me?
the best I can tell you think we need to start selling ads off of our website to where others visit? do tell how that gets done…
third, I guess you know everything — so your site would be where on this list???? dying to know that… I’m guess you have been in this business so long that you by now know everything and are simply messaging in from the Bahamas on your yacht — since you know it all, right? this commenting on LostRemote is just a hobby…

might i suggest a TARZAN movie first?
that chest thumping seems right up your tree.
10. invitedmedia | April 9th, 2007 at 8:19 am
and when the movie ends drop alexa an email and see WHY their wral graphs ALL look to be inverted IF, as you argue, their audience is growing, page views are growing, rank is growing. ????
you, tarzan.
me, boy.

invitedmedia I gave you a chance to display your knowledge and show the world you know it all..
this concept of geo-targeting, which so far seems to live where Unicorns dance with elves, is a great idea.
I love it. I just need to know more about it.
please share the silver bullet that will save us all from oblivion. please.
you are smart and the rest of us are dumb.
12. invitedmedia | April 9th, 2007 at 8:38 am
and i gave you a chance too.
actually, going back to your initial post will show just how “smart” you might be.
you stomp your feet about how “wral would come in 9th of that list”.
later you post that local sites get
no media attention “(maybe that’s a good thing- let them fly under the radar)” was your quote.
well, which is it?
????
“silver bullet”? sorry, wrong series.
best of luck to you.
signing off from his meager 104′ broward yacht moored in the bahamas, invitedmedia.

ooops, while i was writing that last comment alexa answered my email (they know i only post to lr as a hobby).
seems they always invert all local stations graphs. but google’s and youtube’s are in the upright position.
darn.
those guys!!!
somebody get zell on the phone!

here’s the thing…
ideally, we are all supposed to learn something from this site.
sure, it’s entertaining from time to time, but the idea is to get new ideas about how to do things… share insights and collaborate.
the insight I was offering that for all the hype newspaper sites get they actually don’t do all that well. many other TV sites do just as well as the big boys and never get recognized for it. now, I didn’t stomp my feet — I merely made that observation. read it yourself.
then, yes, later, I did wonder if that was a good thing or a bad thing. it’s probably good overall that it goes unnoticed, but would help in the industry to give context. so it’s both good and bad. (it is possible to have a gray area on some things — what a concept)
at any rate, you pointed out the panacea for us all and then never explained it. (oh, and because I used the “wrong series” term then you take your water polo ball and head back to your yacht)
so, I’m not sure who ends up looking like an idiot here.
I suppose since I’m sitting at my desk making a mere 6 figures and actually doing work and trying to improve things while you are sipping champage on the lido deck and letting the cash flow in from the geo-targeted fairy, that you’re not the idiot.
but, wow, what a way to tell us how smart you are and then never deliver…
maybe one day I can move up to be a cabin boy on your yacht…
meanwhile, if anyone else who is a productive member of society is reading this thread wants to share what they think geo-targeted ads are — and how they can change all of our lives — please chime in. I’m all ears.
until then, back to work — the mortgage must be paid somehow.

“pulling a 40% profit margin”.
lr commentors past would suggest you consider foisting more of your site’s operating expense onto the tv side. then you can boast a 60% margin.
don’t feel bad….everyone’s doin’ it.
