Google buys Doubleclick for $3.1 billion

The bidding war between Microsoft and Google has ended with Google acquiring Doubleclick for $3.1 billion. “Google really wants to get into the display advertising business in a big way, and they don’t have the relationships they need to make it happen,” said Dave Morgan, the chairman of Tacoda, an online advertising network. “But DoubleClick does. It gives them immediate access to those relationships.” Doubleclick recently unveiled a Nasdaq-like advertising exchange that also got Google’s attention. To say the least, this acquisition cements Google’s dominancy in the online ad world.

Bold USAToday.com design paying off

When USAToday.com launched a bold interactive design last month, it simultaneously received high praise and sharp criticism. More details on CBS video deals

We’re hearing from CBS’ new partners a day after the network announced sweeping deals to distribute much of its best programming across the web. Some new details:

Brightcove: Users who watch CBS programs on Brightcove will be able to post comments, interact with other users, remix content through interactive editing tools and share videos through personal channels on Brightcove.com. Users will also be able to watch shows in a full-screen theater environment.

Joost: CBS is Joost’s first network broadcast partner. When Joost launches later this spring, it will offer CBS shows CSI, CSI Miami, CSI NY, Survivor, Jericho, NCIS, CBS Evening News, Showtime original movies and Showtime boxing, among others.

Sling Media: “Not only will we provide a video destination on the web, we’ll make CBS content available to our SlingPlayer software, and to our yet-to-be released SlingCatcher hardware - taking the CBS web video straight to the TV,” explains Sling’s Dave Zatz.

Big media still wrestles with digital upfront

Merrill Lynch estimates that 5 percent of the upfront dollars will be attributed to digital this year (about double from last year), yet many media execs are still wrestling with the challenge of effectively monetizing online video. And there’s also the concern that over-ambitious digital pitches will result in pulling dollars away from their own TV packages. (Oh, the horror!) MTVN’s Courtney Holt has good advice. “We had to hit the reset button,” he said. Now the philosophy is “let’s do something really creative and figure out how to maximize it.” MTVN’s new virtual worlds are one example. “We reached a new audience that loved virtual and loved that environment but might not have sat and watched the show week after week…[There are] lots of places to enter into a point of engagement without having to go through one giant portal.”
