KOVR-TV renames morning show ‘CBS13.com’

Cory Bergman May 3rd, 2007

That’s right, Sacramento’s KOVR-TV has revamped its morning show to revolve around the web — so much so they’ve renamed it “CBS13.com,” the domain name of the station’s website. The show now features a single anchor (it was two anchors last week) and his computer. Explains VP of News Steve Charlier: “There are five morning shows in the market now, and what we don’t want to do is produce (another) traditional morning show. So we decided to focus it on the web and on business, and try to appeal to morning viewers who are into that. We will have some citizen journalism — people sending in home video. We’ll still cover the news, but we’ll integrate it with Yahoo and Google (news and searches). Obviously, it’s experimental. We’ll see how it goes.” Hopefully CBS13.com (the website) will post some video of CBS13.com (the show) so we can take a look. (Thanks for the tip, Ray! Free registration required for the link.)

Adds Jason in comments: “The whole newscast is largely created on the fly. I think it’s a great idea for the morning. Who needs to see a repeat of the news from the 10pm the night before? The question is: will weekday morning news viewers want to sit down and interact live on their computers?”

Interesting - Sounds like the ratings for the am show were in the toilet and this is a cheap way to stay in the morning game. One anchor and business news - read this to mean no field reporters, crews or editors needed. I wouldn’t read much into this as far as dedication to the web goes.

    i’d read alot into it.

here, the detroit newspaper partnership has just changed its name to the detroit media partnership. and they are spending tons letting everyone know it…like they are running scared from the term n-e-w-s-p-a-p-e-r.

seems, if as billSAC says “ratings were in the toilet”, they could have made an attempt to bring in the paper.

    misery loves company.

they could have done a better job on the name too.

sacramento.com is owned by “theB” i think.

Actually, I read an article a couple months ago about their weekend morning news. The whole newscast is largely created on the fly. I think it’s a great idea for the morning. Who needs to see a repeat of the news from the 10pm the night before?

The question is: will weekday morning news viewers want to sit down and interact live on their computers? I can see weekend morning news viewers doing it: they’re not getting ready for work, or getting the kids off to school.

I hope it works! I love the idea.

i think it’ll work BIG TIME.

the problem is there are very low barriers to entry so when the competition sees this work they’ll just do a knock-off.

great area to try it in too.

sorry if my previous comment sounded negative. i was just taking bill’s angle for a spin.

Would be funny if a show named cbs13.com was not available to be viewed at cbs13.com.

The only problem with “CBS13.com” is that the name doesn’t roll off the tounge easily enough. It’s not like “Today” or “Good Morning America” where it’s just phonetically pleasing. But, in terms of being groundbreakers and innovators, it’s a great idea!

You have to realize that cbs 13 is part of a dupoloy. cbs 13 and upn 31 are both in the same building owned by the company viacom. Good Day Sacramento is the winning morning show. So, it wasn’t that ratings were tanking and they didn’t want to put the effort to make a killer show. They already have one within the company. So, they really are experimenting and trying to create a new product. The focus is on the web.

If they’re hoping to get viewers to get on their computers in the AM, I think they’ll have difficulties. As I remember, research shows morning news consumption is, at times, largely aural as consumers are rushing around getting ready for the day ahead and not watching, much less at their computers.

    News is still news.

Terribly uncreative and uninspiring name, too.

    How’s it different?

The name doesn’t tell you anything more than the station has a website. Is it a show about the website? Is it interactive?

I don’t think people will be fooled.

Either people are going to watch your station’s crappy newscast or they’re not. If they’re not, change is necessary…

…but I’m not much for confusing change.

Start with making your show and promotions better…

the morning team’s comments about Rush & the Ombama song. Hey guys do some research! This started with Joe Biden, then Sharpton then the LA Times calling Senator Obama “the magic negro”. If you ever botherede to check it out you wouldn’t come across as so lazy & vapid!

You guys really look foolish. “Barac the magic negro” has been on the air since early March. No one has complained since all the lyrics are quotes from places like the LA Times, from Democratic politicians and from Al Sharpton, himself. You are typical of modern journalism - ignorant and deliberately false because of no investigation - ready, shoot, don’t bother to aim. “We don’t want it good, we want it Friday.” No wonder you are losing market. I hope you lose more.

If you folks need so badly to raise your ratings try running some looney tune cartoons, perhaps a Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck Oldie .. I ‘ve never heard anybody loosing a job or broadcasters liscence over one of those classic flicks.

I feel that the interview with Tyler Perry and Janet Jackson was very shady of you all who suppose to be “PROFESSIONALS”!!!!! But, it just shows that we still have a lot of prejudice and bigot people. However, I feel that a reporter should at least be neutral when it comes to representing someone’s movie, song, etc. Sacramento should really open their eyes now to see how stupid and ignorant a so called “PROFESSIONAL” reporter conduct his self. I feel that you are very petty to even bring up something that happen such a long time ago but I guess you don’t have a conscious or any morals for yourself. I know that you will probably delete this from your comments but that will be fine but long as you are aware that you reap what you so and if you don’t know what that means then what goes around comes around ten times harder. I wish you well with your career and maybe you will learn from some of your ignorant mistakes. Good Luck
