Worst ratings since ‘87 for ‘CBS Evening News’
Cory Bergman May 8th, 2007
In the first week of May sweeps, Katie Couric and CBS Evening News recorded the lowest ratings for the newscast since 1987. Meanwhile, ABC’s World News outpaced NBC Nightly News. “(It) adds to the sense that Charles Gibson is eclipsing Brian Williams as the nation’s favorite network news anchor,” writes the AP’s David Bauder. For NBC, the week was its fourth lowest ratings since ‘87. “Those are worrisome numbers for networks heading forward,” Bauder writes.
Just take a look at this chart from SFGate.com. Ouch…

Sad, but not surprising. Of the three old-line networks, CBS (and Viacom) under new media the least. They have no cable all-news station, and their response to YouTube is to threaten to sue about once a week…

The CBS Evening News rating are gifts that keep on giving courtesy of previous owner Laurence Tisch and Rupert Murdoch.
When Murdoch started buying stations in 1993 to create the Fox Network, only Tisch of the big three wouldn’t step up and pay to keep his VHF stations. ABC did and so did NBC.
That’s what has reduced the distribution for CBS and why at the dinner hour, the best they can be based on numbers available is the very good number three that Schieffer delivered.
When you are on a U in Atlanta what do you expect?

Looking at the charts, these are some scary numbers for all the nets, but still network news is reaching more than 18 million people daily… that’s still a huge audience by any standard.

18 million OLD people and not much of an invitation to younger viewers to jump onboard either -a high-priced anchor was evidently not the answer.
unless a metamucil and cialis cocktail is shown to add 20 years to the average life expectancy, things don’t look good for the days ahead.
you have an aging loyal audience to an industry that is being eclipsed by technology.

I only watch about 5 minutes of network news each day and that is early in the a.m. and at 5. I get local news and weather!
Network news do not appeal to me any more.
