NBC to put show on cable first, reruns on NBC
Cory Bergman May 13th, 2007
NBCU will schedule first-run episodes of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” on the USA network and reruns on NBC — the first time a major broadcast show has moved to cable. The idea may not be very popular at some NBC affiliates as they suffer through one of the worst NBC May sweeps on record. “There is no pullback at NBC,” argues NBCU CEO Jeff Zucker. “This is about boosting USA, giving NBC scheduling flexibility and maintaining a franchise that is important to our international strategy.” (WSJ sub. req.)

Actually this isn’t a first time this happened;”The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd” did the whole broadcast/cable move first in 1989, though that was because NBC cancelled it first, then it moved to Lifetime.

Yeah, and “Monk” ran on cable, then “ABC” showed reruns during a shortened summer season and the same might be said for that “Queer Eye” show.
This is most likely the first time the setup was contractual and it’s the first time with an important, established show, but you’d have to quibble about the definition of “is”, if you were to call it a first.
