Study: Viewers less satisfied with prime

Think primetime TV isn’t what it used to be? You’re not alone. A Publicis study found that 38 percent of respondents said they’re less satisfied with primetime television than in past years. Almost 75 percent report that programming is either less compelling or no more compelling than years past. Only 9 percent said they are enjoying it “a lot more.”

They must be watching FOX. If you’re not into American Idol or the handful of scripted shows that they manage not to cancel, you would be dis-satisfied.
I remember when FOX was the bulk of my viewing schedule. Futurama, King of the Hill, Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle, X-files, Boston Public, Ally McBeal, 70’s Show, Undeclared, 24, Grounded for Life, Titus, Bernie Mac, Family Guy and Dark Angel were all excellent shows in the 2001-2002 season.
Nowadays, I pop a tape in for the Sunday night animation block, and, um… that’s it.

The networks are intentionally cutting their budgets on every show but a few tentpole shows. More importantly than the budgets though, is that they are cutting the level of thought they put into the show. Reality shows are cheap but they also don’t require writers and creatives. Game shows are very cheap, and if you can find a comedian to host it you can go with the humor and fake drama that arises from the money on the table.
Lost, 24, Heroes, Gilmore Girls, Grey’s Anatomy are getting to be the exception in TV now, not because they have great writing, but because they have *any* writing at all. If the networks are surprised that people get bored with Deal or No Deal eventually, they deserve every bit of the results they are getting.
