Scene from New York: The Opie & Anthony Protest

Steve Safran May 17th, 2007

Captured on my cellphone cam: the “Million Pest March,” a gathering of Opie and Anthony fanatics on a New York street corner Thursday morning, protesting O&A’s 30-day suspension from XM. (Somewhat less than a “million,” there were certainly a couple dozen “pests.”) Oddly, the protesters were outside the offices of FreeFM in New York City, which hasn’t suspended O&A (it’s a different show on FM than on XM). So it doesn’t take much to figure that the “protest” was timed to coincide with the O&A morning show on the radio.

Quite frankly, I have no pity for them.

It wasn’t so much a protest as a show of support.

As for the “no pity” and “who gives a ????” idiotic remarks, think about it. If someone pays to hear that kind of stuff (ie: me) why shouldn’t we be able?

If you want to claim something is uncensored, it had damn well better be. The problem is uncensored sounds a lot better than corporate nannied.

Their suspension was purely political and designed to curry favor with people in Washington for the merger. They themselves (not a guest) have said much worse in the past, but they weren’t trying to merge with Sirius back then…

Nobody ever claimed that the PESTS were a particularly smart group. However, one must commend them for their loyalty. Here is the real slippery slope: What is to stop an Italian/American group from claiming to be offended by the Soprano’s?
These are paid services. I am a loyal O&A fan and they were the SOLE reason I purchased XM. (Ron and Fez were a nice bonus)
I hope that more people in the media will stand up and question this type of response. These were not public airways. These were not comments made by the on air talent.
Get ready the Internet is the next to start feeling the regulatory squeeze from fringe groups.

Some Italian-American groups have been offended by The Sopranos. HBO simply told them where to go. End of controversy.

In retrospect, XM should have taken the same approach. It’s not like the company has more than a ghost of a chance of getting fed approval for the merger anyway.

Last I checked, I was paying $12.95/mo to be offended if I so choose.

The channel is clearly labeled as explicit, marketed for crudeness, can be blocked on request, and I’m annoyed that XM has taken them off the air for being — crude..

I am pulling my subscription at xm in protest. I urge others to do the same. who are they to tell me what I cant hear! They are the reason that I got xm in the first place.
