Local CBS sites upgrade video player

Take a look here at the upgraded player on WCBS’ site. Some of the new features include continuous play of clips after the first one is started, a rotating list of thumbnails, category listings, length of clip counter, a play button layered over the top, improved sharing functionality and a “pop out” player option that allows the user to watch clips in a pop-up player. Earlier indications, I’m told, is the upgraded player is driving a lot more views right out of the gate.

It’s about time.
For local news sites in NYC, WCBS has the fastest turnaround between on-air and on the web. Plus there’s lots of video, both packaged and raw. I’m glad they finally have made their embedded player larger and more flexible.
The WNBC and WABC sites are embarrassing for stations of their size and resources. Even the upgraded WNYW site is better for video.

Whether a user requests a clip to be viewed or not they are being served video which they may or may not be interested in. A lot more views may be generated but some of them are coming from this ‘feature’ that artificially inflates traffic.
Artifically inflated traffic in turn leads to artificial prices for advertising not based on what users are actually watching.
Kind of a small window, no integrated search feature but a nice video player.

I like the look. Very much like the Brightcove players.

The audio is really bad and the image quality isn’t great either.
