Ah yes.. The newsroom tour...

I will never forget the drama and hype surrounding another newsroom "transformation" a few years ago

The Orlando Sentinel launched a "Starship Enterprise" desk area that was SUPPOSED to be revolutionary...

You could NOT escape hearing what a GREAT and INCREDIBLE idea it was.. For like THREE YEARS it was ALL you could hear about the Orlando Sentinel!!!

The only problem was:

1) No one used it

2) No one used it correctly. They thought just making a desk where "a rep from every news dept. could sit" would suddenly change things. The problem is they needed to tell people HOW to make the change.

Nothing ever did change and it was a hopeless idea.

Someone basically saw an assignment desk at a TV station, saw SORT OF how it worked and then built one at the Orlando Sentinel.

NO ONE thought to figure out how or why they work!!! (Oh, and I know all this from working there...)

I won't even get into how unimpressed I was with two-day tour I had at the Media General newspaper/TV station three years ago.

Maybe it has improved but talk about a load of hype... synergy? B.S.

Go work in a real TV station and then you'll see just how they are missing the point and the real connections...

As long as newspapers think they have figured out this -- and this is what they come up with -- they are doomed.

What sucks is that we have to continually hear about how smart they are.. UGH!

It'll be interesting to see how they all fit in there - I know you can't really see much from the video, but it doesn't look that big.

It certainly looks smaller than MSNBC's current set-up.
