We hear podcasting is going to be big. So we thought we’d try it out. Cory and I met up in New York City and, of course, had to talk shop. In episode one, season one of “Get Lost,” I grill Cory on the previously undisclosed and possibly scandalous origins of Lost Remote. We also tackle the topic “Is Paris Hilton news?” We do this for the sole purpose of improving download numbers.

“This is not going to be about technology – this is going to be about programming….” said Michael Harrison, producer of Talkers Magazine’s New Media Seminar in New York City on Friday as the room cleared out after the session with big name radio hosts on “Navigating a Talk Host Career.” (This is new media?) It was an odd, but needed, qualifier. It seems strange that, in 2007, this “ad hoc” (in Michael’s words) message needed to be thrown in to start the seminar and draw people into the tent of a discussion called “Technology and Programming.”

Mindy McAdams wrote the book on Flash Journalism, literally. Her teaching online journalism blog is a killer resource for anyone in the business, and she’s dished out another keeper with her list of gear for the multimedia reporter. We get asked this all the time. Thanks for putting it all together so well, Mindy! (Pictured: Edirol R-09 audio recorder.)

Back around 2003, Discovery had lost its identity, heading away from nature shows into dangerous DIY and reality programming. Times have changed, thanks to Jane Root. Since becoming Discovery’s chief three years ago, Root has put brawny adventure and impact shows front and center and the channel has emerged as the one destination on the dial that men will actually power down their game consoles to watch. Ratings are up 16% this year and 11% among the elusive 25-to-54-year-old male.

Marketwatch examines how ABC News rose to the top spot using a low-key, less-is-more approach. Made me remember what a surprise it was that Bob Schieffer’s old school approach to the CBS anchor chair was so well received. While there are debates about the continued relevance of the nightly news format in the hyperconnected information age, there may be value in the comfort level of the predictable, straight-up approach.

This Saturday WNBC will premiere OpenHouse New York, a real estate show that features “real New Yorkers and their brokers” buying and selling their homes. In a interesting move, the show is a partnership with LX.tv, a well-produced, luxury-lifestyle video site that spans food, nightlife, art, shopping, fashion, wellness, weekend escapes and family living. Right now, LX.tv is in New York and Los Angeles, but it has plans to expand to Miami, Las Vegas and San Francisco. Watch the promo below…
LX.tv is owned by LX Networks, and the site is powered by Brightcove.

Submissions to CNN.com’s citizen journalism section I-Report are up 30 percent since the start of the year, which works out to about 3,000 a month, including photos. Explains the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “Many were clips of breaking news, but a few people — including aspiring TV reporters — have become regular I-Report contributors. Only a handful of the very best items make it on CNN. More are used online.” (Via TVNewser)

ShortCircuitz allows users to upload their own video parodies to win up to $1,000 and get on the MTV show of the same name. YoMomma (launching soon) invites users to upload their best “yo momma” jokes, and the best clips will air on the MTV show. “We’re giving our viewers a chance to see themselves on-air and commune with other fans who share a passion for dissin’ others or creating parodies of the most seminal moments in pop culture today,” said Brian Graden, President of Entertainment for MTV Networks’ Music Group. “This parallel online and on-air experience reflects our unique ability to use the combined power of our TV brand and digital assets to create one unified experience that ultimately drives deeper engagement with the MTV brand and its franchises.”

Meanwhile, MTV reports that its RealWorldCasting.com project has yielded 16,000 applicants vying for a spot in the new Real World house.

Tonight’s launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis will be Twittered right here. “We’ll send updates to your phone or Blackberry to let you know how the countdown is going and whether launch is on or scrubbed,” explains the Orlando Sentinel’s The Write Stuff blog, which will also be tracking the action. (Thanks Matthew!)

Full props and a big thank you to Rafat Ali and his team at PaidContent. They know how to throw a great networking event. I went to their mixer last night at the NYC Hilton, and they drew 550 people. Got to talk with Rafat. We’ve had a virtual friendship for years now, but it was the first time we’d actually met in person. It was an excellent mixer - people were walking around and chatting with strangers like they were old friends. Networking at its best. I highly recommend hitting one of their mixers if you’re in a town where they throw one. Congrats to Rafat, Staci and our friends at PaidContent.
