YouTube to begin filtering test in a month

Cory Bergman June 11th, 2007

Finally, YouTube said it would begin testing its own fingerprinting technology with Time Warner and Disney starting in a month. The technology aims to identify copyrighted clips and let the copyright holder either remove them or share in the ad revenue. Earlier, YouTube promised this technology would be in place by the beginning of this year. (WSJ sub. req.)

“by the beginning of this year”

contrast that with nbcu’s statement about a simple name and mgmt. structure for their jt when it was first announced months ago; “shortly”.

tell ‘em what they wanna hear.

So here’s the big test… I have a 1 second clip of a Disney animated film on YouTube right now, with absolutely no obvious Disney/film-related keywords or descs. Let’s see if their filtering system is good enough to catch that.

Well, hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but it is more than possible to do and will probably become a standard for all. In fact it is quite probable that it would be stopped at the point of conversion upload. What better time to read the headers that are embedded in the movie files themselves.
